A new issue with my new boat

As for your speed, a few things to keep in mind.

1) Use the GPS for speed not the speedo if you have one.

2) The Hudson has an approx. 2MPH (1.6k) current at max flood/ebb so you can have a roughly 4MPH differential which you seem to be saying here.

Assume 50MPH with no current then you are +- 2 with/without current or 52/48. Just something to keep in mind. A lot of people tend to forget this fact. Also as the season goes on we as boat owners tend to load up the boat with extra stuff. And you will def. see slower speeds this time of year as opposed to early in season due to temperature changes. An engine can make more power at 70 degrees than it can at 90 degrees.

The more I think about this I believe others are correct in that you probably have a flaky sensor and the boat is running fine...

Thanks John,

I noticed that yesterday. But the current impact seemed even greater. For example, at 3500 going downstream, I was cruising around 35 mph. When I turned around and went back up stream, I was only going 26-28 mph. so a pretty big impact from current. My impression from listening to the engines is that they are running fine as well. BTW, the speed is from the GPS, not a speedometer. I think you make a valid point about the performance at 70 degrees versus 90 degrees, so that coupled with whatever barnacles I did not get off and the extra weight from my accumulated crap is likely the explanation for th 4-5 mph lost since the beginning of the season. 52 mph is above rated spec anyhow (rated is 51) so I probably had a good current going with me at the time.

4kts is not much of change, more gear on board, current, even a little breeze will affect your top speed. higher temperature coudl also impact performance... all just a little but it can add up. dont' loose sleep over it.

did you make sure the water intakes are clean and free of barnacle ? I find it odd that both sensors woudl fail... if you have some barnacles in the water pick up, it coudl restrict the flow a little, fine at cruise but jsut over the edge at WOT.

Pascal,

I cleaned the barnacles to the best of my ability, so that should not be a problem. There is just one alarm, so I can't tell if one engine in specific is triggering it, but I think it is both engines because, I would leave one at wot and the other normal and the wot engine would cut back and the alarm would sound. Then i reversed it and the same thing happened. But I agree with you and Rommer, the speed difference is not a big deal and probably due to natural causes, weight, wind current, etc.
