A piece of sailing history goes up in smoke

Fires on mega yachts happen but in this case it is a piece of sailing history which went up in smoke. This boat was built back in 1975 by a legendary sailor to compete in the 1976 singlehanded Transat. Yes... single handed in a 200’+ boat... the boat was then converted to cruising and had a colorful history.

 
Did I read that article correctly, he not only single-handed it, he only had one foot?!?

Sort of... I think they were able to save most of his foot but he had limited use.

sadly he disappeared a couple of years later while racing solo in the Route du Rhum between France and the Caribbean. He was racing a trimaran and neither him Or his boat were ever found.
 
What a guy! And what a piece of technology that boat was to be capable of being single-handed!
