Apparently when the broken port motor was removed the mechanic (no longer use them) used a little too much oomph and broke the raw water intake seacock. I'm still breaking in the rebuilt motor and though the guage never goes over 150 degrees, the gill exhaust headers were warmer than the other motor at 1000 rpm.
My son and I compared water flows from open sea strainers and sure enough - something was wrong with the seacock. Apparently the forced valve was only 1/3 open when the handle showed fully open ... water trickled in.
Long story short - we replaced the seacock with the 15,000 pound vessel in the water with a combination of wooden plugs, four hands coordinating the swap out, and I suspect a bit of luck. Nice
