There is a forum called abacoforum dot com. I used to participate in it, and relate accurate discussion regarding circumstances in the Abacos. I have been supported by business owners in the Abacos as well as locals with regard to my statements.
There are people that don't want to tolerate this discourse because they don't want potential visitors to know what is really going on there. Many participants in this forum are home owners and or managers of property trying to rent out their houses. Others have not been there in quite a while and reflect on past experience as though it was still relevant.
Having been chastised for calling out sailboaters that over harvest and don't spend much down here, I have decided to stay out of that forum. It is censored.
I will suggest going elsewhere for unbiased information.
 
Bruce, it's more the Americans that want to rip people off. There are second home owners and managers that will go to any extreme to sell their wares. All they want is good news that misleads the general population into using their home for a week or two. It matters not what the inconvenience. Marinas are shutting down due to lack of paying their bills. Bad news everywhere.
Believe me, I have not trashed them over here. I have pointed out where they have a few issues on one cay. Immediately I start getting nasty grams from people that have property there even though there are articles about 2nd home owners being fed up as well. I dunno. They just can't face it I guess. They are losing.
I have been supported by the business owners down here. For the life of me I do not believe they want to sell their product inappropriately because they know if they p1ss off one, they p1ss off a thousand. It's this Dr. Ralph guy who has very thin skin and cannot tolerate any negative discourse.
Point. There are folks that come down here and hang on the hook for months on end. They pump over the side in small harbors and over-fish. I've seen it. Ok? So I mentioned this on a forum and got trashed by the forum owner who apparantly makes bucks via the forum and always wants a positive slant. Either that or he is influenced by the home owners or managers of property. Just my humble opine.

It's not the locals that make it tough. It's the people that censor others thus preventing change that could make it better.
 
A brief look at the threads gave the impression that restaurants, marinas and landlords are trying to survive a poor economy by reducing quality and portions, poor service, bad attitude and exorbitant pricing on the few remaining customers they actually have.
Did I get that correct?

PS how does a sailboat over fish? They cant store much and certainly cant eat it all.
 
Dan, two points:

1 - This is a good reason for you to head to the Exumas!

2 - Why not spend your time updating BE with your information as well as the Explorer Charts forum?

You're not the first person I've heard complain about the Abaco forum. It's rare to see bad news (like stolen boats) posted there. Patty will have such information on BarometerBob.com, but it's frowned upon to post such things in the Abaco forum.
 
Yeah, really thin skin in their rant forum line. The place is otherwise over run with nice nice attitudes about their cay and if anyone points out an issue, they go ballistic. The pass off all sorts of crap like having a credit card held at the bar is normal.

They love to shoot the messenger instead of realizing as Americans over there, they are stuck with what they have.

Anyway, I heard on the VHF the other day that gas was 6 bucks a gallon but I paid 5.30 at Lighthouse today to fill the dink. We took it over to Marsh to shop this morning and it was calm. On the way back it was 2 feet of chop. We followed a 35 (I think) Cabo across at their idle speed and survived. Wet, real wet, but we made it.

You mean it's not? Heck, most of the strip clubs in Daytona Beach do that...........at least that's what guys tell me. No first hand knowledge of course.

Never happened in Ft. Lauderdale or anywhere else around the world we've seen.
 
Where was this, Nipper's or Grabbers? I have never had either of them hold a credit card. As a matter of fact, the only place I have ever had a credit card physically held has been at truck stops when we're towing. I've got a fleet card now so that will no longer be an issue the next time I tow.
 
That would have been Grabbers. Jimmy is gone. There was some dialog about why but I have a tough time with it. He was always hustling from what I saw. Nippers on the other hand, has always imprinted a card on the busy days and I have no issue with that.
 
Dude, it's the islands, go with the flow. Why stress out about a place you don't even live full time or own property. :-)

If the real locals want change things will change, slowly.

Just remember the old Bahamian saying "Soon come, soon come."
 
Bill I hear you. We are not sweating this a bit. Just sayin'.

What I don't like, is when people pawn things off as being wonderful and well, people make plans based on that. Then they find out later that there is no power, no fuel, no restaurant, and no etc..

For example they have this bill fish tourney coming in June, and sooner still, the Barefoot Man Concert. Both on Guana. If the marinas had no power, no fuel and no water, how would you feel if you were led to believe they will exist when you showed up and they did not? They keep saying they expect it to change, but they also told us the might have resolution within 10 days and it's been two weeks. Given there is no fuel since last year I've been wondering how deep the bills are and how they can get paid...

They cut us a very sweet deal when the power was shut off on us so the local managers are sweet hearts.
 
Wow. I actually like Grabbers better than Nippers. I've been to Nippers at very busy times and never had to hand over my card. I'd walk out if they asked. I guess if I got back it'll be Nippers or nothing.

Just tell me that Capt. Jack's is still cool. That's one of my favorites.
 
Yes, things on Hope Town are fine. Absolutely no problems what-so-ever on Elbow (knocking). Great lunchs at Sea Spray, the Reef Bar, On Da Beach, Abaco Inn, the Edge and yes Jacks! We have to get to Pete's Pub. The Dock and Dine on Man-O-War is also very good.
