Reading the thread on the Nauticat 33 ghost ship got me wondering – how would you judge when to abandon ship (hopefully none of us ever have to make the judgment)?

Growing up I was always told the axiom is that if you have to step down into a life raft it is not time to go. I heard this in numerous safety seminars before many offshore sailing voyages. I raised this on the Nauticat thread and another poster brought up some good points that the boat was not in the US, a rescue ship was there, as opposed to the chances in a life raft – which is no bargain.

So, the question begs, at what point would you consider leaving the vessel behind? What would you be considering when making the call that your ship is no longer safe for you to be on?
