I have a deposit" the donzi, after two seasons and countless repairs it's time to move on to something different. Starting to look at sportfish diesels in the 35-39 size. Been tools to run from anything with 3116 cats. Anyone have thoughts on Detroit's, 3126 cats or Volvos. I've gotten familiar with cummins and 3208 cats.

Or better yet, anyone know of a good boat for sale
 
Boatless is no fun but I absolutely love shopping for a new boat. Good luck.

as far as I am concerned, once you go diesel, you never look back.

There's outboards and then there's diesel and I don't see anything in between.

For diesels in your size range, I would choose Cummins or Yanmar, in that order.

take a look at Boatdiesel and do some research on the others, especially the 3116 Cats.

Thanks, I'm awaiting a replacement title and hoping sale will close tonight or tomorrow. Of course I had a sensor fail on seatrial too...
 
What do you plan to do with the diesel sportfish? Fishing, cruising, both?
 
In addition to John's question, your budget will play a major role here.

There are some really exceptional values locally on Viking 35 with Cat 3208s. But, older boats while costing less require more $ to maintain.

Cat 3116 has a bad rep from the block issue on motors built overseas. Cat stood behind them for a time. Issues manifested in the first few hundred hours.

Cat 3126 hav a decent reputation. Maintenance is key.

Cat 3208 - one of the best motors Cat made as long as they were not boosted to max HP. Otherwise, not so much.

Detroit - 6-71 is one of my favorites. Heavy but bullet-proof. Especially if not maxed on HP. These motors are very rebuildable but parts are becoming scarcer and the real Detroit gurus are retiring or dying off.

Cummins - about as solid as any with good local support and not outrageous parts pricing.

Volvo - not my favorite due to cost of support and pricing.

Yanmar - solid reputation. Will come down to local support. I think Grover is the local support guy.

H.O. Penn is the go to support for Cat and I have not heard great things with $.

You will have to look at each prospective boat differently. If you are looking at a sporty that has been heavily fished offshore, you need to suspect whether it has been run hard or not. Maintenance records and upkeep are key. Remember that diesel mechanic and cheap never go in the same sentence.

Having said all that, I don't ever want gas inboards again. FL retirement boat will have outboards.
 
John and Mark, plan is for both fishing and cruising. Budget is somewhat on the lower end since I'm taking a bath on this boat. I'm looking for a two stateroom layout. I think I'd like to have something no older then late 80s.
 
We'll it's official, closed on the boat this afternoon. Searching for the next one......
