AC/Heat Pump Problem

The aft AC in our boat is an older Cruise air unit. It cools very well and it heats very well. However, once it starts to put out heat or cold air, it does not stop. It has been doing this in the several months that we have owned the boat.

If I power up the unit with the temperature dial setting at the midpoint, unit does not produce either warm air or cold air. If you rotate the dial about 1/4 turn to warmer, heat is produced. But it will not stop regardless of how hot it gets. Same is true if you are cooling.

There is what looks like flexible a copper thermometer in front of the cold air return on the unit, so I believe it should be sensing the air temp and shutting it self off at some point.

Any experts suggest where or what would be a good first step to diagnose the cause of this problem?

Thanks,
Mike
