From the title of the thread, I thought that San Francisco had lost all of its air conditioning...
 
City wanted Ellison to pay rent and union wages.
Too bad it was a fantastic venue .
 
Very short sighted of the city. I'll bet the AC brought in much more than it cost.

So did I. Of course a/c is not normally need there anyway so it would be no big loss.

Chicago would be a great setting as well. But hard to beat the natural stadium in the bay. Really gave you a sense of the speed.
 
Considering AC usually corresponds to the Oracle OpenWorld event, Larry already contributed a significant amount to the cities coffers.
That's a min of 60,000 people in the city spending LOADS of $$ for almost 8 days.
 
Yet, San Francisco is bidding on the 2024 Olympics. Nobody can make money on the Olympics anymore.

consensus was that it did not bring nearly as much as expected. some good improvements made, but I'm sure the city lost money. Merchants made out
 
So why are they bidding for the Olympics?
 
Translation to all this.....

No returning AC = Pelosi et al. did not get a kickback.

2024 Olympics = Pelosi et al. hoping for a kickback.
 
Bermuda is on the 'maybe' list. Imagine those boats on that blue water. Great TV but JMO, the shoreside facilities are not there for an event of that size.

The Newport, RI to Bermuda yacht race starts this weekend. Something like 200 boats this year but that is a totally different race.
 
Really disappointing it is not coming back. SF makes it really hard for most to do business there. The organizers were already putting an improvement plan in place days after the event so I am sure wherever it is next time it will be great for the City that ends up with it.. So SF didn't get the new 49ers stadium, looks like will not get the Warriors stadium, not having the Americas Cup back but, yes, it looking to get the Olympics.

The Bay was such a great venue and I feel really lucky to have been here to experience The America's Cup, it was something I will always remember. Very short sighted for SF not to make an effort to keep it here.

If the merchants did well, then the city should have done well. A city's success is directly related to the success of the businesses within its borders.
 
Too bad for San Francisco. Pelosi and Feinstein (being from the area) might have brought pressure to bear on the city folks...however, although they are both wealthy, being progressive liberals, they would probably say that saiing (or boating in general) is only for rich people and the hoi polloi should not be exposed to such excesses.
 
Apparently the city did a comparison of revenues (sales tax, hotel tax, etc) with /without the Cup and didn't see the ROI. So add that to the mix of the usual BS such as demanding union wages. I have no factual basis for this guess, but I'd guess there are virtually no tradesman left in the city any more. The city is in a frenzy of commercial development and redevelopment now primarily due to the tech boom.
