The January issue of Yachting has a write up on "crowdsourcing" and Activecaptain.com. I hadn't heard of it. The charting is pretty good. It has NOAA charts overlaid on Microsoft Virtual Earth images. Also, marina info on the Hudson and elsewhere, and the early beginnings of some local info that users can input. Free but you have to register.
 
I have been using Active Captain for about 2 years and it gets better every day. A great site that is operated by true boaters so they understand us. Jeff and his wife do a super job.
 
I've used it for at least the past 3 years, it really helped me out to get to know the Hudson (had only sailed Verrazano Bridge / Gravesend Bay and south before). As folieadeux said, it just keeps getting better, and they've been doing some very interesting work with applets and such. And they make sure to "eat their own dogfood", they do long-term tests on everything they recommend.
 
It has a lot more than early beginnings! Ton of great info especially in the areas used by cruisers.

I now rely on it more than printed guide. The iPhone app (charts n tides) is very convenient since you can dial marinas directly to check fuel prices or slip avail

I talked to Jeffery last week and the Droid app is almost complete. He tries to never release anything until he has fulled tested it himself so hopefully it will be soon.
 
It also integrates nicely with nav software like Coastal Explorer. One of the reasons I added a bridge computer to the boat last year was for Coastal Explorer and ActiveCaptain.

It's great, but we all need to write reviews, and add locations to make it even better.
 
Love it. Used it all the time last year. For a river newbee like me, it was super valuable.
 
Ben you were holding out on me I never heard of this I guess I will have to check it out.
 
Used it for our ICW trip. Absolutely fantastic! Saved our butts more than once with info on marinas & bad spots along the way. I understand the new stuff is even better. With all the boaters that contribute it is constantly updated. Would not go cruising without using it!
