I am planning on adding two additional speakers to the stereo in our bowrider. I would like to put 6.5" speakers in the area below the rear seat, the area is fiberglass, but the problem is it is not perfectly flat. I have measured, and a 6 1/2" speaker will fit and avoid most of the curved are just below the seat cushion, but the area the speak will be in is not totally flat. Any ideas?

I think a 6X9 might fit better. Can you see whats behind the area you want to cut?

Have thougth about 6x9, either way the speaker is not going to be flush because there is a curve to the seat base from top to bottom, probalby 1" of curve. The area behind is storage, the cushions lift off.

You will need to make a couple of "custom" adapters. You could make them out of 1/4 inch plywood and then glass and gel coat or paint them. It will be a fun, weekend project.

Another idea might be to mount the speakers in a box and cut the hole to fit the box. The upside is the speakers would sound better and cutting a square(6.5in) or rectangular(6X9) opening would be easier. Speaker boxes are readily available and designed to get the most sound from your speakers.

Thanks for the ideas, looks like I either need some type of adaptor ring to create a level area to mount the speakers OR if you look at the carpeted area between the seat base and seat back, I am thinking about some type of surface mount in the corners. You can't see from the picture, but there is room off to the sides of the seat.

You could make the "custom adapters" from StarBoard material easily.

agree with neal, Starboard is perfect for this kind of job... just as easy to shape as ply. and hassle with finishing

Good idea on the Starboard...that makes me lean back towards flush mounting them instead of surface mount. I would think I could cut and file the starboard to creat a perfect fit.
