While coming back from welcoming the QM 2 my Sea Ray monitering system alarm went on with the "aft sump pump", we were cruising at 2400 rpm on 3116 Cat diesels with occasional top out at 2800 rpm. When I slowed down the alarm would go off but when I accelerated the alarm came back on. Both engines are full of oil, any opinions on what this issue may be?

John, you're thinking it's an engine oil sump? It sounds to me like it's the sump pump for the salon A/C condensate and aft shower drain. If the aft sump indicator lights up, it's just the water in your A/C pan flowing back to the drain hole in the pan and filling the sump box. That's normal. If it's accompanied by an audible alarm, then the box is overflowing into the hold and the bilge pump is kicking on.

Thanks guys, forgot about the shower sump. Several years ago I fried a diesel engine when a oil line blow off and I never heard the alarm. Just don't want to have that happen again

why would you want to monitor your shower or AC sumps ?

or is SR calling the bilge pump ... sump pump ?

SeaRay provides indicator lights for sump operation in each head, and on the dash. The lights in the head are useful just to ensure that the sump is operating before you complete a 20 minute shower. (hey, a seat, a "skylight" and almost unlimited hot water because the sun heats the water hose... and it's a great way to nurse a hangover)

SeaRay installed a LOT of sure-to-fail Attwood sumps, so that light has saved me plenty of hassles.

The indicator on the dash has been useful when said Attwood floats stick, making the pump run incessently. When you hear water being discharged, you can also glance at the dash and determine if it was bilge water that should be investigated, or just condensate.

BTW John, if you have Attwood sumps, the floats will fail, if they haven't already. I installed a mercury Rule float switch in the Attwood box, and it's performed perfectly ever since.

The problem ended up being the sump pump was replaced at some point with a 500gpm when an 800gpm was supplied from the factory. The 500pgm could not keep up.

Ill bet the world it was replaced under warrty with the smaller unit........

Anyone.....

I found dumping some Raritan CP in the Sump once a week keeps it from sticking. It has worked for years. As soon as I stop - within a month the float starts sticking.

John, are you sure something else wasn't going on? The older Attwood sumps came with a 750GPH pump, but during a full-pressure shower, the pump only cycles for about 3 seconds, every 10 seconds or so. (in other words, less than 1/3rd of the time)

My (admittedly basic) math skills suggest that even a 500GPH pump could keep up...
