The cabin on my 312 Rinker has an odor that smells like moldy salt water, oil, and mildew. Can't seem to pinpoint the source but I do use the air conditioner all the time. Have cleaned the carpet and bilges and air conditioner filter. Any suggestions to improve air quality or where to look for contaminants?

You might want to check the sea strainer for the AC unit. Some people put Bromide or small chlorine tablets in it, I would not because they are corrosive. You might want to clean your hoses to the AC unit, I have never done this because I replaced my AC units 3 years ago and all the hoses. However you might want to try some bilge cleaner if you have a wet bilge. I had a similar problem but it was related to a small leak in my old Aluminum waste tank. Once it was pulled and the forward bilge was sanitized and painted along with a new holding tank the smell went away. I also replaced my sanitation hoses. I have to admit it did not smell like odors from the head it must have been the wet bilge combined with the leaking waste tank.

i purchased a 10 year old boat a number of years ago that was not used very much. it also had the A/C unit running but was filled with a similar smell that just would not go away. the best i could do was air it out to get some relief. i finally purchased an ozone generator and set that up next to the A/C unit so it would circulate throughout the boat. within a week the smells were all gone permenantly. i also installed one made for the bildge as the boat had gas engines that would always evaporate the gas left in the bowls after using the engines and it would fill the engine compartment with the smell of gasoline as it did. bildge buster was the name of the unit i installed there and the same thing, problem solved.

bill's points about finding sources of odors should be addressed first, but if those are eliminated i can tell you the solution i found was worth every penny.

few things irritated me more than stepping aboard after a week and having a smelly cabin.

Anything inside the hoses for the AC unit will stay inside them. They cannot cause an odor in the boat unless they are leaking. The bromide or chlorine is supposed to prevent marine growth in the plumbing or hoses but I've never seen a manufacturer recommend it so I don't do it. As pointed out, these chemicals are corrosive.

I don't personally like ozone generators, as I've stated numerous times here on the Forum.

Generally, they don't do much of anything other than draw electricity. If you do get one that is powerful enough to actually do any good at reducing odors on the boat, it will most likely corrode every piece of exposed metal on said boat. Ozone, in addition to being listed by the EPA as a hazardous material, is extremely corrosive - which is WHY it is considered to be hazardous. It wreaks havoc with your lungs.

So if you tend toward asthma, COPD or have other breathing or lung problems, definitely DO NOT use an ozone generator on your boat.
