Hi Al,
First, let me say my Surveyor, who I have used twice and will use again next week wrote me
up on a 1987 Tollycraft CPMY. Twin 3208TAs with appropriate exhausts.
Just aft of the Shower in the Aft Cabin, IF you raise the fake floor in the closet, you can see the Stbd engine's exhaust "pipe" going through a hole in the Bulkhead. It does not touch anywhere. The bulkhead is ... uh ... 5/8" marine plywood. The diameter of this hole is such that the exhaust is about 2 inches from the wood, all the way around the pipe. The exhaust pipe is typical diesel I would guess.
The write up said I lacked support between the bulkhead and the exhaust pipe. I called Gordon, who worked as the Purchasing Contractor for Tollycraft and I think he bought all the spare parts. If he does not know the answer, he will call another former employee and find out for you. He is a SUPER GOOD SOURCE.
He said there was never anything between the exhaust and the bulkhead. If a person ....
attached the exhaust pipe in any way to the bulkhead, his thoughts were it would pass vibrations thru the bulkhead, creating problems. That is a rough paraphrase.
Having been a Residential Real Estate Appraiser for almost 20 years, I try very hard to be nice to the person valuing my home, boat, etc. BUT I would like to explain what Gordon said to the Surveyor. He can write me up again, if he wants, but I will get Gordon to write a note explaining all this to the Insurance people. I guess I could print Gordon's email and hand it to our surveyor. He is a good surveyor and pretty nice guy. This will be the third time I have paid out of my pocket to use him. He is THOROUGH.
Have you ran across this particular situation yourself? On another boat or in an example of some kind?
Thanks Al.
