im working on getting a boat running for a friend & the engine is done but the o/d has a noise in neutral that for lack of better description sounds like rocks inside a cement mixer. also reminds me of an engine that has severe pinging,( its not pinging)
the noise goes away in gear. i fear the outdrive has some issues. the drive was off for a new impeller. the ujoints look good, clean & tight.

We had a gearcase noise that turned out to be a bearing in the Upper Gearcase. I don't remember it lessening in gear, though. Are you hearing this in water or out?

You DID refill the gear lube, right...

The gimbal is fine but thanks for the suggestion. The noise seems to be coming from the lower half

Check to see if a slight movement of the shifter will make the sound stop but not turn the prop. I can make mine do as you describe by moving the shifter slowly towards forward or reverse. You might just need a little cable adjustment............D...........

But Charlie, that would take all the fun out of it.......D...........

the boat's not in the water, hasn't been since servicing, when it was services, the oil was fine.

For future reference, ANYTIME there's a problem with the outdrive, CHECK THE OIL. looking for shiny flakes.

Checking the shift adjustment is the next thing. Remove the anchor attachment of the lower cable and shift by hand. That way you can really tell if the noise comes from bad adjustment
