ok so here is the delema...I bought a boat at auction..knowing it needed some help..

The boat is a 1986 21' Chris Craft with a 305 and alpha drive...the control is a side mount single lever.

First thing was it sat for 3 years (only freshwater use though)..the compression numbers checked great. The engine ran great...at first the throttle/shift lever moved with some effort but since loosened up back to the normal tension.

The issue now is that on the trailer the boat shifts in and out of gear (forward, neutral, reverse) with NO problems...However for our first outing...the shifting is a bit of a problem.

It will go into forward but when the lever is backed off to neutral if stays idling in forward...It doesn't like to come out of gear..then after some force it likes to go straight to reverse...with a light touch you might find neutral....

My thought is lower shift cables..any other suggestions where to start?
