I recently had my sterndrive stolen right off the back of my boat [:-banghead] and had a new one put on. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction regarding the specifices of the proper break-in procedure.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Use totally normally. but change OD's lube at 20 hours. Sorry for your loss. Hope it didn't cost you too much on deductable.
 
There is a break-in procedure. Most new drives have a card or brochure detailing the break-in.
 
The new drive should have come with a break in procedure. I believe the standard is 10 hours. No more than 75% throttle during the first 5 hours and varying the RPM's regularly. After the initial 5 hours you can go short bursts at WOT, but still vary the RPMS. You are also supposed to put the drive in reverse at least 10 times during the initial 5 hours of break in. Change the gear oil after the 10 hours.
 
I thought all that rpm stuff was for breaking in the ENGINE, not the drive? Something about seating the rings in the engine. I don't think there is anything to "seat" in the drive itself, but I would take it easy for the first 10 hours or so, and certainly change the ube after 20 hours.

I buy a new manual with every vehicle I have ever had. I also buy a service manual to cover every boat I've ever had. You would do good to buy one AND read it. I advise anyone who would do any work whatsoever on their boat to buy and read their service manual.

There is a lot you can learn from this site. Don't make fun of it or take the advice lightly.
 
Yes, I read all the manuals for all the products I buy (most of the time), but my point here is, someone is asking for some specific advice, and while your advice is good, it's not very helpful in this situation.

Additionally, are you saying my specific advice on this subject is wrong? Should Bill NOT take it easy for the first 10 hours and NOT change the lube after 20 hours?
 
Last night I checked the documentation that came with my new outdrive a couple of months ago and the procedure I outlined above is what it called for. Although there are no rings that need to seat in the drive there are still new gears that need to lap in and mesh properly. I would check with the manufacturer or rebuilder of your drive and follow the procedure they call for to make sure you do not void the warranty.
