Walked the Embarcadero on July 4th.
Here's a couple pics of the work being done for America's Cup. They have a long way to go!

The America's Cup races are in 2013, I believe the Finals are in Sept/Oct, but there should be some earlier practice.
They also will be racing August this year as well as during Fleet Week. Don't see how they will be ready for this year.

Sure seems like a tall order! It sure will be exciting to have the races in SF Bay! I used dream about that.......makes me kind of wish I still lived in the Bay Area. well, not really!

Liz - where are you in the Sierras? My Dad lived at Lake Wildwood

Hmmm not sure where Lake Wildwood is.... I'm in Amador County; hwy 88, east of Lodi. Jackson is the county seat and the Jackson Rancheria Casino is nearby. It is a lovely area which begins in the foothills and climbs up to Kirkwood Resort with lots of gold country history in between!

We have stayed in your area a couple times. Beautiful country. And, the oldest wineries in CA.
Have you ever eaten at the 49er Cafe? They have the spiciest wings I have ever had. I used to ski at Kirkwood quite a bit. Also Bear Valley. Not sure Bear Valley is still in Amador County.

Lake Wildwood is further north off HW 20 near Grass Valley

Sounds like you know my neck of the woods pretty well! Bear Valley is in Calaveras County just south of Amador. I've never been to 49er Cafe....but I don't eat spicy hot food....... Amador has many many 100 yr old Zinfandel vineyards. Makes GREAT wine!!!!

Sutter Creek Gold Mine has just started operating as a real working gold mine again. The only one in the county. It will be interesting to see how they do over the years. Maybe we will have another gold rush! LOL

I still have some Amador Zins from my last trip over there
I can't remember what winery this was in Amador, but I thought at first this was a statue. He just loves being king of the hill

We have friends in Lake Wildwood. They live right across the road from the lake. It's a small lake, but very peaceful. Mostly like a retirement area (which is what our friends are). There are plenty of wild turkeys that run through their property on a regular basis.

We have a cabin on 14 acres on Independence Rd in Glencoe. The property has been in our family since the late 50's. Growing up, I spent almost every 4th of July at "the cabin". I really enjoyed the fireman's BBQ that they held each 4th. I also spent a lot of time at Stiver's Ranch in Railroad Flats. I went to a private grammar school that was owned by the Stiver's here in the Bay Area and they started their ranch and held weekly summer sessions there. It was extra cool since it was right around the corner from the cabin.

We used to stop at Gary's Market (no longer there) on the way to the cabin. It was on 26, near Ridge Rd. Gary was a transplant from Castro Valley. They closed it down after he passed away. It was his labor of love.

Shad Lake was another hang-out of ours as well as Mokelumne Hill and Jackson. Even today, every now and then, we'll head over to Mel's Diner and grab one of their great burgers.

And of course, in the opposite direction is Angel's Camp and their famous frog jumping. Lot's of bikers there...

As far as the SF sailboat races go, what do they plan to do with that monument once the blow-boaters blow out of town?

When we had our previous motorhome, we occassionally stayed at the 49er Village RV park in Plymouth. Nice place. It's about 15 minutes away from the casino.

When my uncle built the cabin, his generation of relatives all built cabins up there in the area as well. Glencoe, Pioneer, West Point, Mok Hill and Plymouth. One of my second aunts had a doll shop in Pioneer for many years.

That was a great generation!

I used to water ski on Lake Wildwood. One time there was a deer swimming across that narrow channel that heads back to where the boat ramp is. Didn't get a pic - long before camera phones.

Sounds like fun!

I like the pic that you posted. Very cool!

It reminds me of the old commercial that Robert Conrad used to do with a stack of batteries on his shoulder. He dared you to knock them off. That goat has that same look... [:-spin]

And speaking of Conrad, I met him once while he was filming a movie in downtown Hayward at an abandoned bank at the corner of Main and B St (it's still there, and is still vacant). He was a little guy and had a bad attitude.

It's funny, as most stars do, he looks a lot larger on screen... [:-pirate]

BAB, my Ex-husband may have known you or your family!!!! They own a cabin on Woodhouse Mine Rd. My Father-in-law, Emmett Doherty, was born in Jamestown. After WWII he bought mining claim rights and a handmade log cabin. It is still in the Doherty Family.

We would go to that cabin almost every weekend all year round. My 4 kids grew up going hunting, fishing, camping and gold panning in Calaveras Co! I now have a piece of property in Glencoe, off of 3 Cent Flat Rd.... it is a small world isn't it??????

And I know exactly where the "Doll House" property is on Hwy 88. The new property owners are working at improvements on their weekend retreat. Do you know them?

We should probably take this off of BE for we are way off of any boating topic! LOL you can email me at boaterbetsy at gmail dot com if you want to continue to compare notes.

My youngest son was a commercial pilot for 20+ yrs; he used to fly charters out of Angels Camp and often would fly Conrad's family/friends to and from SFO. Conrad had his own plane, but he often needed to hire a second plane and capt to get everybody from his Bear Valley place to SFO.

My son also said he was an "A$#". LOL
