America's Cup

Nothing but light air today. Maybe not even enough to race. Bermuda has provided variety of sailing conditions. Everything from near calm to borderline too much wind for them. Long holiday weekend here this weekend. We do love to party on the water so racing or not people are going to be out. Looking at the size of the spectator fleet we put SF to shame.

Curious - can you view the races from Shore?
In SF, many people on shore had a better view than people in the spectator fleet

When I first saw them in SFO I had a case of Future Shock. My brain could not sort out what my eyes had just seen. It said No No there must be some mistake. There was no mistake!

Well, here we are again: 3-0 for NZ. Hope is San Francisco's come back again.

Yes you can. For free too. Elevated better views than from the water. Of course best views are from your Lazy Boy with the big screen in front of you but good live commentary can be had on VHF 20 & there is something to be said for being out there on the water watching. Our Great Sound is much smaller than SF Bay so 'stadium sailing' is much better for the spectator & more challenging for the sailor. Visually the colour of the water is tough to beat too.

I missed the racing today. Went boating at the other end of the island. About to watch the rerun on TV. Oracle got a double whoopin again.

Spithill is getting a bust ass so far in the finals. Wondering if we are going to see a repeat of SF.

Always amazing to watch a boat running at 35knts on 12 knots of wind - freaking amazing.

I've been out on a spectator boat to watch, my own boat during the challenger races, watched Artemis/NZ when Otterridge slid overboard, sat in the rain watching them, sat in the Village at 90* frying like a piece of bacon and today watching the 3-4 race from the grandstand.

All in all a great experience, the infrastructure is setup and functioning perfect.

Hope these guys come back!

Too bad it looks like the next cup won't take place in Bermuda but in NZL :(

Looking forward to another chance to see J boats race tomorrow. Inshore this time. Just hope there is some breeze. Lots of boats out on Friday drifting around with nothing to see. Nothing moved unless it had an engine.

It looks like next two racing days (Sat and Sun)will have again light winds which will favor NZ unless Oracle makes drastic changes.

I am still gobsmacked that those boats will travel more than 3 times the wind speed.

( Though, I wonder: how much horsepower is generated by the grinders/cyclors? )

Oracle was out practicing on Monday....they have all week to get it right. Spending Saturday at the Village again, hope to leave there kinda hopeful.

Forecast for this week is light and variable with Sat being 7-9 knots, hopefully clouds will bring a few gusts, Sunday might be a cancel day (given the current forecast).

AC Youth out sailing now, pretty impressed with these guys.

Well, the J Boats put on a good show Monday & Tuesday. Don't know when or if so many of them will ever be seen together again under sail. Also gave me a chance to enjoy some of our sights at the East End.

I just watched the first race today. I'm going to have to disagree with the venue being better than SF. They are a long way from any shore viewers except for the finish line. In SF, the longest legs of the course went parallel to the shore and the boats came within 100 yards of the shore. there were no spectator boats allowed on that side of the course, so it was unobstructed viewing and More than 20K people could easily see the race from the shore.
Plus, the winds had the boats going close to 40kts almost every race.

Doesn't matter. Next cup match will take place on NZ.

This match has been an embarrasmemt. Twice ealrunover the line and three penalties for going beyond the boundary.

Huge error at the start today that gave NA the race. These were the first 2 races I watched and it was boring except for that start error.
Were there any lead changes at all in the other races?

Fraid, your rght Pascal - I don't see them repeating their come back like they did last time

What actual "sailing" do they do on those boats anyway. They have 4 Grinders (Cyclors for NZ) that just keep the hydraulic pressure up. I don't seem them doing anything else. The helmsman steers the boat, but is there any other Manual trimming or adjustments? Obviously, there are tactics and trying to pick the wind, but what other actual sailing tasks are there? Seems like a good Tack or Jibe is >90% on the helmsman.

They re constantly adjusting the wing and the foils. The wing can be adjusted like a sail, shaping it for max performance.

The racing is a nit boring because OTUSA is just so far behind in raw speed and because of all the errors.

Well OTUSA just got their asses kicked by the kiwis. NZ have the cup....taken by a 26 year old at the helm.

OTUSA (who I was cheering on) were out sailed by the kiwis, and lost because of too many unforced errors (early starts, going out of bounds, poor gybes, and simple having a slow boat.

OTUSA trained in heavy weather (the past winter) and never thought the June winds were so light....they couldn't deal with it.

Looking forward to watching the preps for AC36 and the world series events for the next AC in 2 years time.

I could see the Kiwi tactician guy using some sort of hand-held control, but I did not see anyone on USA boat trimming anything.

yeah - really thumped. They were not setup for the light conditions and too many bad mistakes.
So apparently, NZ may change the boats

As much as I was hoping OTUSA would keep the cup, the kiwis deserve it Smaller budget, a kiwi skipper, a kiwi CEO, no mistakes and above all a whole country supporting their challenge. Here nobody even knows what the americas cup is about.

They deserve it.
