If one was to want to have a safe or a fairly protected anchor spot in the Patchogue area a little west to Oakdale or east to Bellport both south or north of the bay. Where would be some recommended spots. We have been many times to the Connetquot river, Snapper Inn etc.

We are so used to Hemlock Cove, CGC, Sore Thumb or tucking in around the south side of the Robert Moses bridge. It would not be worth the fuel going there from Patchogue.

Also, we are talking about inboards with 36" inch draft. So in front of Watch Hill may not be an option unless we want to get bounced around all day staying in deeper water.

Brad,
One of my favorite places to drop a hook is a bit east of Bellport in Moriches Bay...Great Gun. There's a small marina with dockage for bigger boats and the ability to anchor for the smaller crafts. There a public bathroom and a boardwalk to the ocean. Picnic tables and some bbq pits available on a first come basis. To the east of the marina is a great place to let the kids use nets to catch baitfish...great place to hang out with a group of people.

Brad,
Anywhere in the peconic ... Get out of the sand Box...

Perry,

Is that just east of Smiths Point bridge ?

Yup, just past the Narrows. Just like WH, stay in the channel. Short water on both sides but very easy access.

I've also put some thought into another spot to drop the hook. I was thinking Bellport Bay would be a nice spot with a non-southerly wind. If you look at a chart it shows good depths ev en as far as the northwest and northeast sides of the bay. What do you think?

I think of that every time I head to WHB. Also around that Island to your starboard heading south at Bellport Reach, the narrow channel heading down to Smithpoint Bridge. Seems to be very shallow but I see private (I think) buoys near there.

Haven't been thru that are for a couple of seasons but did spend much time going from Patchogue to Moriches. I would think that the bay would pick up with any wind out of the west as well. Maybe tucked in to the northwest side...never hooked up there. Outside the bay get's like a washboard when a west wind picks up (typically every afternoon).

That's John Boyle Island Brad and the water is very skinny in there. There are two sets of buoys to the West of the island. One is for Bellport Beach on Fire Island (private) and the other is for Old Inlet. Old Inlet is part of the NPS and is very shallow getting in. I was there with our 25' and thank God I had I/O's as I did need to trim up. Other than the skinny water the mosquitos are bad, so bad that it makes Watch Hill seem like kids play. Just my .02. If I didn't live so close to Bellport I would look into leaving the boat on the hook, taking. Dinghy to beach and walking into town. Lots of shops, restaurants, etc.

All this typing and I just might check it out on Saturday or Sunday.
