2000 Monterey 302 with a windlass, not sure of the brand. There is a stainless metal plate on top, with what looks like a plastic tooth where the line feeds in. It has chain and then line. The top circular plate fell off this weekend while I was manually turning it trying to pull in the anchor.

The first symptom a few weeks ago was it would not pull line in without my assistance pulling. Now it just drops the line, freefall, with no resistance when putting out the anchor. I tried pulling the line myself from inside the anchor box compartment while operating the windlass, no improvements. I could pull the line all the way thru from inside the anchor compartment with no resistance.

I have no idea what the 'top circular plate' could be. Hopefully, just a cover.
Most all windlasses have a clutch which loosens with time. It needs to be tightened; usually be a supplied tool, but could be a simple wrench.
I suggest you try this, but also finding the make & model; then download the manual from the mfgr's website. They may also have the replacement "top circular plate'.

Just read a reference to a Monterey 302 with a Simpson Lawrence (> Lewmar) windlass, though that does not mean yours is one.

Do you recognize any of the exact models here:

Or here?:

Didn't a manual for the windlass come with your purchase of the boat? That should include a parts diagram, or if you recognize your model in those links there should be a downloadable manual.

Thank you for the feedback. It looks like the Sprint 400 from memory.

Yes, there is a manual on the boat if I recall. I'm the 2nd owner, previous owner kept everything, which has been helpful. It was midnight when we docked, raining, 7 hour idle cruise home, too tired to look then. I'm an hour from the boat, I will check for a manual make and model this weekend.

If it is a S/L Sprint 400 , perhaps this will help, as least to visualize parts:

I don't know much about windlasses, but it looks like that model doesn't have an adjustable clutch mechanism that I could see in the diagram & list.

Unfortunately Lewmar is in the UK, so phone support (Tel: +44 (0) 23 9247 1841) may be a little more complicated, but FWIW they do have a US email support address:

The Lewmar V700 series is reportedly the closest relative of the Sprint 400:
