Another Collision.

I just don't understand how in open sea this happens. Were they both on autopilot and the crews not on lookout?

This is ridiculous. Even though the hit is on port side how can they not get out of the way of a slow movIng tanker !! It a not like a us warship is not maneuverable

agree - totally ridiculous
how does a Billion dollar warship not avoid a collision

Honestly, besides embarrassing, this is scary. We like to think we have the best army, navy, airforce, etc. This is ridiculous. I like to think we are well protected, but these goof ups don't exactly build confidence. And, I wonder how our enemys are viewing us, possibly losing fear of how powerful we are NOT!

Twelve sailors were highlighted as culprits in the Fitsgerald collision, including the Captain and Exec.

This is the 4 recent major incident. There is something seriously wrong in our Navy when we have a problem like this.

Is the morale in our country also contaminating the Navy?

I think "possibly" and the Why is that it seems USN likes to demoralize their junior officers. Might not be universal/widespread. Might not be so with USNA grads.

Such was the case literally decades ago when most of the junior officers were being pumped through OCS. The USCG worked us, but they did not haze and belittle us, like recent USN OCS grads I spoke with. 30 years later a young USCG officer replied thus: "Yes I hear the Navy eats its young."

The JO's are tasked with routine operation of the ship. They need to do their jobs with confidence, and I wonder if they're encouraged to do so.

I am wondering if crew are afraid to make decisions without the captain's involvement. Avoiding collisions is basic seamanship and not above a teenagers ability if they dont freeze. I cant imagine how this can be anything except a command structure failure.

I'm thinking someone above the ship's CO needs some "attention"? Are both boats under the same command?

I'm thinking crew members are going to start questioning leadership

I don't understand this either. I haven't seen or heard any JOs being brutalized on my ship for using their heads-- just the opposite.

Thanks for that, Greg. I'd hoped somebody with current experience would weigh in with a more favorable picture than I had.

I'm not sure what Greg means but people can't be afraid to make decisions based on fear of screwing up. It's a fine line between managing and brutalization.

It means that at lest on my ship, any evolution can be immediately stopped or altered by anyone, enlisted, junior officer or senior officer, who sees something he or she feels is a danger developing. In fact, that behavior is encouraged.

That's a good thing as long as there are protocols to prevent knee jerk reactions that can make things worse.
