This time in Pound Ridge. Get this, two guys borrow a friend's canoe, both can't swim, neither wearing a life preserver. One guy stands up and the authorities are wondering why it tipped. Most of the lake is 4' deep, they were in the deep part, 6' deep.

Does the friend who lives on the lake and loaned a canoe to two guys that can't swim get charged for manslaughter?

"It doesn't seem to be anything more than a tragic accident"

What is tragic is the amazing lack of common sense shown by all involved. (Boaters & boat owner, not the rescuers.)

Charge the father (and his father, if living) with child abuse for not teaching their kids how to swim. That's the root cause.

Makes my blood boil every time I hear one of these stupid stories of people drowning in calm water or a small pool. Everyone ought to learn to swim, absent some legitimate disability. Period.

If this guy had spent 15 minutes in the water at some point in his life, he'd have known he could take a deep breath and do a back float until help arrived.

No I don't really believe in spurious child abuse charges, but, people who don't teach their kids to swim should really be made to feel shame. There's just no excuse.

That's why I was so concerned about getting my 7 year old to learn to swim on his own in the water, without a life vest. Many of the commercial pools and camps and places like that won't allow him in water over his head, which sucks because then you can't learn. This past June I took him in a pool down at a PA hotel and we went in the deep end together, and at his pace, he conquered his fear. Now he can swim across the deep end of a pool without a life vest and he's comfortable doing it. They still won't let him in a lot of pools because of his age, but at least I have confidence now that if he falls in the creek where we keep the boat he's not just going to freak out - he knows he can swim...

Usually in the creek the kids swim with a vest on, and they've been pretty brave - even swimming clear across the creek and back. But I wanted him to have no fear even with that vest off, in case the worst happens someday...

We knew that our kids would be spending a lot of time on the boat, they learned to swim before they learned to walk.

That explains the funny way they walk Mike!

JUST KIDDING!!!!

Mike's kids are very normal and well behaved. The webbed toes are very interesting to look at too! ;)

We are fortunate. Our municipal swim club has an extremely affordable membership fee and swim lessons are part of the deal.

We are considering continuing the lessons in the fall. The Y has a program that we can join. With the young kids, I'm diligent about the PFD's. There on from the moment they go through the gate until after we get back to the car, no if's, and's or but's about it.
