In an effort to hone my decision, I've sifted through the many synthetic teak threads that have appeared here and around the web, but I figured fresh, focused dialogue never hurts, especially in the winter.
I've thoroughly researched Flexiteek. I accept that it gets hot. I also know there are several alternatives. What I'm interested in here is hearing specifically from Flexiteek owners about their experiences, likes and dislikes, separate from the "it gets too hot" issue.

-How long have you had it?
-How has the finish and color held up?
-If you wouldn't get it again for reasons other than how hot it gets, why?

One reason why I eventually removed the fake teak altogether was that it expanded and contracted in the heat and the cold at a different rate than the underlying deck and the screws "worked", made bigger holes and the deck leaked. Fake teak also came loose.

Not to beat it to death but in the sun you could not stand on it in bare feet.
 
Had it for two years on my current boat and absolutely getting it on the new boat. Like the way it looks initially, way easier to keep clean than the white non-skid (footprints, smudges, etc), mine darkened slightly in the sunlight and I had an instance where some sealant got on the material, I sanded it off and had a light spot for a couple of weeks but it darkened to match, so really easy maintenence. It is hot to step on, and I would sometimes spray it down or maybe put a beach towel down to sit on if direct sunlight made it too hot...still way better to me cosmetically and vs the constant cleaning of the non-skid.
 
We installed Flexiteek at the beginning of last season and have been very happy with it. I found the color has held up very well and maintenance has been easy. About the only surprising thing about it has been that the brushed texture catches animal hair a bit, but it is no big deal at all. I did manage to get one stain on it - a ring from the bottom of a bug spray can. I have not tried to remove it yet.

I would absolutely do it again. I will probably do the bridge when that rug needs to be replaced. My install was done by Advanced Plastic Fabrications in Hauppauge, NY and they did an excellent job.

Having it installed in the spring. I see you went with the white lines. Why white and not black? Seems the white would show more dirt?

We have ours on all the cockpit hatches and the lazerette.

It is a major upgrade from the factory plywood, but yes it does get hot in summer.

When wet for a sustained time it will show a number of other stains, however they dissapear for the most part when dry.

Expensive, yes but what a difference.

We would definately do it again!

Hi Dave

Just personal preference. I find the off-white is a softer look. I have not found dirt to be an issue.

Agree with all the above. Someone accidently spilled red candle wax on mine. I used a 3m dish/pan scrapper sponge and ice cubes on it after scraping the big chunks off. I almost all came out and today it has faded away. I would do it again. A guy in Florida cut mine out from my own templates. He did a great job. Email me if you want his conact info.
 
I did extensive research on this as well. Looked at Nuteak, Flexiteak and even Sea Dek's faux teak--a high-density marine-grade foam. I ended up trying the Sea Dek product because it was incredibly easy to install, soft, and had no issues getting hot...even in full Texas Summertime heat. Holds up well, and 1/3 the cost of Nuteak. So far, extremely happy.

Note, this photo was taken after being out all day. So lots of moisture on the outer third of the platform. Again, very consistent look and the feel is "soft." call them and ask them to send you a sample.

Note: I am *not* affiliated with them in any capacity whatsoever. Just a happy customer.
 
Checking their website leads me to understand this is an applied "foam" layer to an existing platform, and not a whole new platform??? If so it looks like it may have a lot going for it.

Looks a whole lot nicer than my pressure-treated pine!

Like Dave (Current Sea),I will be installing (actually having it installed)fake teek in April. Although I cannot comment on a particular manufacture, or about most of the questions you asked, I would like to share with you why I decided to do this. I asked all the questions you did, I did my homework on the internet, and what I found was the following.

Yes the fake teek will get hot, depending on where you live, this may be a problem or not.
Will a throw rug or maybe you old exterior carpet solve this problem for the short time of the season this may be a problem? Yes!!
Is the fake teek much better looking and more durable than exterior carpet? YES
Does the fake teek make your boat look so much better? Yes!!
Is the fake teek easily repairable? Absolutely, much more forgiving than carpet or gel coat.

Which product is the best????????

After reading many testimonials, going to each manufacturers site, who the hell knows, they all claim to be "the best".

I chose TT Marine and the product he hocks, Plasti-Deck.

If you do a google on him or his company, you will see more about the product and more important about TT Custom Marine.

The installation IMHO, plays a larger part of the overall satisfaction than the actual product. just food for thought.

I am thinking of replacing the old carpeting in the cabin of my boat with faux teak. The surface getting hot is not an issue since it is inside. I am trying to decide if I will do it but the issue I have is: what to do about the vertical surfaces. For instance, the vertical "riser" part of the step is carpeted. I addition, the dinette is on a raised platform and there is maybe an 8 inch high vertical surface to be covered. I have not seen teak on the vertical surfaces in a boat cabin and I think matching the grain or the boards from vertical to the floor would be very difficult. I think I'll find exterior plywood behind the carpet on the sides so just painting is probably not an option.

Has anybody done something like this on the inside before and how did you deal with the vertical surfaces?

Why can't the faux teak go on a vertical surface?
I have real teak in my boat and on the vertical surfaces they did carpet.
 
I removed the interior carpet last year. I installed the interior grade teak with good results. Had alittle bit extra so i also did the lower head.

Peel and stick on existing swim platform. THis came in three sections as my platform is 12' x 4' and would have been difficult to handle in one single section. THe adhesive is incredibly strong so you have to be very careful when you put it down because once it is down it is incredibly difficult to pull back up without damage to the pad. I then super glued the seams and you cannot see them at all now. Extremely durable and still looks brand new after a full year.

I've been considering these type of products as I have old non-skid that is getting difficult to keep clean. One question I have is for insulation. Did anyone find that the addition of the flexiteak or equivalent added and sound insulation?
