FORT LAUDERDALE -- A 623-foot freighter ran aground about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday about one mile offshore of Port Everglades, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.
The Norweigan ship Spar Orion hit a large reef outside the port and remains stuck, said Petty Officer James Judge, spokesman for the Coast Guard. The freighter is carrying cement from Sweden, Judge said.
The Coast Guard is inspecting the ship for damage and possible pollution. They are hoping that the high tide around 11:30 a.m. will lift the ship from the reef.
No injuries have been reported and the cause of the grounding is under investigation.
