I work with boats every day as a marine engineer. I am constantly in boat yards, whether its just a service yard or a yacht club. Last week I had to take a 2005 Searay 390 for a test ride after having the motor replaced. The boat was terrible, the handling was not good, it took a chop very poorly.
The older searays handled a lot better were built much heavier. Granted the extra weight was more of a drain on gas or diesel. But when it comes to docking and handling a heavier boat is much more of a pleasure to drive and cruise in.
The new searays mostly all have bow thrusters..That could be for two reasons.
1. Either the people buying the newer searays cannot and do not know how to handle a boat properly in tight quarters or when docking OR
2. There is not enough weight and underwater line to help the boat handle properly.
Right now searay is making boats for people who want a fancy looking boat and nothing else. I really wish searay would go back to QUALITY made boats.
Look at a formula and then look at a searay..Formula has always been a boaters boat, grab rails in right places, performance, maneuverability, and a solid over all boat. No "fake wood" in the cabin....
Im as big of a searay fan as the next searay owner. I just wish Searay would go back to building a BOATERS boat and get away from the terrible stuff they are building today.
Bring on the hate mail, apparently I deserve it for stating facts and opinions....
