Anyone have a grappling hook?

Make sure your knife is sharp. There is sure to be rope, fishing line and all kinds of stuff to get tangled up in.

I am sure there is no issue with Marina.
They were talking about divers as well.
Pink antifreeze, I had it in dock box to winterize boat.
Good point on the lines and stuff, noone knows what is down there.
They should damn up opening of marina and drain the place!
That would be cool!

I still have all my Scuba-Pro brand equipment and have an advanced certification along with many specialty certifications. Linda also has hers…. But for me I will never fit into my suit nor my BC… I think diving is done, unless I get real back in shape. Even if I were tip top ready to go, diving in Marinas is plain dangerous and would leave that to others who like to live in the danger zone. If the electric is on there is always the chance for stray currents….. Just Google people electrocuted in marina waters….
 
Tide is so low right now you can probably see if anything big is there!

IIRC, that contraption is affectionately referred to as a "Hoffa Hook".
 
yes, that's what it was designed for. I really didn't want to come out with it. Its part of a larger whole. pretty nasty but effective.

Very effective. I have, unfortunately seen them in use once too often. However, dragging a slip & fairway for junk is another more positive use for the tool.
 
I'm sure the visability will be very poor, especially if the muck gets disturbed, would have to feel for stuff... Really good point Brad my friend, I wonder when they turn on the power, or is it on all year?
 
Marina had no power after storm but I hear it is staring to be repaired.
 
I could see parts, pieces of piers, picnic tables & all sorts of things submerged.. all things you'll want to keep away from those props.. I'd think they'd need to drag the entire marina to be safe.. (or drain it as you suggested Dave) Wow, & all the new hazards in all your favorite cruising areas as well. Almost enough to make one want to stay put at the dock for the first few months till everything gets figured out again.. :(

If you need a diver, let me know, I would be willing to take a ride up, and help you out. I have experience diving in zero vis, and diving with no current would take all of the challenge out of it!! Depending on your slip, the hardest part most likley would be get in and out of the water.

Brad, electricity is a problem in fresh water, not salt. Should never dive/swim in a fresh water marina.

Never knew this, next question is why?? Whats the difference between salt and fresh water?
 
The salt water is very low in resistance -- lower than the body --- so if you got between the source voltage and ground the potential would be carried by the salt water.
on fresh water -- it has a higher resistance than a body -- so the current would flow through the body and not the fresh water.

pure water is an insulator!!!
 
Generally the water gets crystal clear during winter when all the algae dies. It's much cloudier now than usual for this time of year and I imagine that is due to all the silt deposited by the storm. But I'd guess that won't continue forever. There's a good chance that well before stuff starts growing again next summer that all that silt will settle out. Then you just need a low tide on a sunny morning and you'll be able to see if anything is down there.

I'm definitely not planning to be an early boater in the spring though. There's a lot of stuff to be hit and someone other than me is going to hit a lot of it.
 
Just curious.....who's responsible for keeping the marked channels safe from underwater debris? Some of the 5 mph channels near Massapequa, Amityville, etc. are pretty close to the houses and those houses lost a lot of stuff.
