Anyone use Aquaguard Bottom Paint?

I started using Bluewater Paint products as the Interlux I was using had significant price increases. I was using the SCX-Pro 45, but it ablated too much. Switched to the 67% copper content, SCX-Pro 67, much better than the 45 and Interlux Micron Extra I was using.

In Southern NJ, you can get it at Shoreway Marine in Berlin, NJ off of Route 73. Many users swear by Bluewater Paint.

You can also get it locally at BoatersWorld, where it is a SEABOWLD name brand, but uses the same SCX-Pro 67 product name.

I also switched to their Kolor product for my outdrives and worked tons better than the Interlux Prop and Drive. 2 qts for 2 coats on twin VP's. Kolor has almost twice the Copper Thiocyanate than Interlux. Cheaper too.

Their website lists two new products, Drivesleek (which has no copper and is zinc based) and Propsleek (which provides a slippery coating instead of a biocide).

I used aquaguard with the anti slime additive in it. I did the complete application with sanding, prep wash,2 coats of primer and then 3 coats of paint. It did not last. After a month in the water it had a wrinkled feel to the paint and when I pulled for the winter it had a lot of missing paint. The boat was used several times a week. After the remaining paint dried, it had a smoother feel than when it was in the water. What happened???? I will have to remove this to put other paint on for next year. This was not a new boat but one that had not been bottom painted before.

What did you use for the "primer" ? Is the primer still in good shape?

I used the waterbased primer. It was applied according to instructions. It is still there. No peeling that I can see.

I just hauled out for the season. I used Aquagard on my hull and it is spotless. I used aquagard Alumnigard II on my composite drive and it also was spotless. This is my fourth season using it and I like it alot.

LOL. You know me Bob! A lot has to do with the water you store in. Im in a warm river with lots of plush green lawns. Growth is bad here. Our marina is an Aquaguard dealer. It's the base paint in our winter contract. Those who don't upgrade, learn fast that they should have.

One has to wonder if they don't thin the paint to get you to upgrade to a paint with a greater profit margin. Just a thought. Greg Saracco is in an 85* river and doesn't have a problem.

I've used aquaguard (black) on my 25 ray for the last 2 years with no problem. Put it in in april and take her out in Nov, no barnacles at all just the regular slime that a power wash wont take care of. Ready to sand lightly and put 2 new coats on. I swear by it.

Greg is using Pettit not Aquaguard. The marina isn't thinning anything, I know them very well.

My mistake. You are indeed correct. Greg is using Pettit.

yup, been using Pettit Ultima SR for a few seasons. Just as expensive as other brands but seems to flow easier (for me) and I think it holds up better but that's pretty subjective.

Wintersux, I don't believe the Aquagard product contains an anti-slime additive. C/B wrong but I don't think so.

Bob, I've used both Interlux and Pettit paints with the anti-slime. Makes a big difference in our waters.

I used the Bluewater SCX-Pro 67 this year and for a low cost paint it held up very well. There where a couple of spots that need to be touched up for next year but that is probably a result of my half assed prep job.

I use to sell pigment to Aquagard when I worked for a living. I will probably contact them over the winter to inquire about adding an anti-slime additive to existing paint. Was friendly with Ciba who makes the irgarol anti-slime. May consider adding ingredient on my own, depending on feedback from manufacturer. Don't want to alter formula & compromise properties like adhesion, durability etc., etc.
