Anyone use Progressive for their boat insurance?

I had good experience with Sea Insure. Competitive rate and handled a claim with no issues.

The fact that they will write coverage without a survey, tells me that they fall into the category of an underwriter that is "easy on coverage, hard on claims", that is they write anything that walks in the door and then they play hardball at claims time. As opposed to an underwriter that is very selective on what they write and then are reasonable on claims. I prefer an underwriter that has seasoned Ocean Marine Department employees that deal with marine coverage all day every day and not some Home Owner's Policy Adjuster that happens to be on his/her 90 rotation though the marine end of the business.

L. Keith:

You hit it on the dot. when I worked for Progressive, we trained our adjusters to handle car claims. If we get a boat claim the same 2 week trained adjuster that would write your car claim would now write your marine estimate with no knowledge or experience in boats. The number one goal of claims was to find a way to demny a claim before a way to cover it.

Boat US is the way to go. 1 collision claim and 3 comp / theft claims and never had a problem and every settlement was fair and quick.

My own opinion.........

Our boat had damage for Ike. When the evacuation order was over, we called and made phone contact with the claims dept.
They gave us the name and number of the adjuster who was coming out, and what date and time he was coming.
Progressive told me to have the boat hauled and pressure washed so he could look at the bottom. They paid for that too.
He took pictures of all the damage that I pointed out, then he made a look around for himself. When he finished, he
put all the info. into a laptop and it spit out a check.
The boat yard gave me an estimate that was twice what the check was for. I gave the adjusters name and number to the
boat yard, they called him, he came out again with a surveyor and went over the boat again. They wrote another check
on site. When the boat was about finished, the boat yard called again with more unseen damages, the adjuster said to
send the estimate and pictures to Progressive for review. They sent another check, with no hassles.
I would recommend Progressive, and I will keep my coverage with them as long as I continue to get great service from
them.
After the hurricane damage, my premium did NOT go up. I still pay the same every year.

Ihave Boat US and while they certainly arent the cheapest, I had an incident last year and they went way above and beyond the call of duty to get my boat fixed correctly. I hit something last year - who knows maybe one of those Korean mini subs in the middle of the Chesepeake. Cracked the shaft log and water came pouring in. I was able to get it into Zahnisers in the Solomons who were kind enough to get their lift operator in early on a Sunday morning to get her out of the water. Zahnisers recommended one kind of fix, my home marina recommended another fix. Boat US's surveyor insisted on a fix that cost more than either of them. They actually paid Zahnisers more than they originally asked for to repair the boat correctly and gave me a year warranty on the repair. The guy from Zahnisers said that no other insurance company would have done that. Zahniser's did a great job by the way.

We have Progressive for our boat and jet ski. First claim last year after hitting a rock. no problems. They paid and then when there was more damage (a couple times, acvtually) they paid for that. Would recommend. Rich

I think I remember you posting about this last year. You would have sunk if they didn't put you in the travel lift, right? That is one heck of a marina. I try to get there at least once or twice a year. Good location, nice facilities, and an honest staff.

Insurance Company can be great for two years, best company in teh world while collecting your premium, but when yopu have a claim is another.

Run Run Run away from Progressive as far as you can

This is only my opinion, insure at own risk

So, why did you get fired? Since you know so much about Progressive then you know that BoatUS also write Progressive paper.

Interesting and timely thread. I am insured through Farmers and they are exiting the Boat/yacht insurance business. My policy will not be renewed in August. I tried Progressive (and Geico) and they will only provide liability coverage, but, of course, my bank requires fuller coverage. The reasons given are boat age & length (1984 Carver 3607)

Any other suggestions? Anyone using an 'umbrella' policy to include their boat when the boat is financed?

Go to Foremost. They are becoming the Special Lines brand [th] of Farmers. They are all owned by Zurich. Why you weren't referred? Farmers has captive agents where Foremost goes through Independent Agents. According to one of their underwriters, the companies don't really get along.

Foremost.com and find a marine specialist agent.

Thanks SteelClipper. I forgot that Zurich is the big player with a bunch of companies under its umbrella. I'll check on Foremost through an independent agent as well as go back to my Farmers agent(who I'm not too impressed with at this point). May be time to move all my insurance somewhere else.

Two diametrically opposed positions from me.

My Regal was one of the last boats insured by USAA. I have been more than pleased with USAA for more than 30 years.

USAA now farms out their boat insurance to Progressive. I "thought" the service would be the same.

I smacked a turtle on my maiden voyage home from Wilmington. It took Progressive over two weeks to get an investigator to Beaufort. I lost the 2007 season and the marina will no longer deal with Progressive. I have carried them out of necessity since. The rates were good...I thought at $100 per month. They were better than BOATUS and others.

I was solicited by NBOA via Sea Ray. Their rates are 1/2 of Progressive. I have a teleconference with them on Friday.

I shall keep you posted.
