I don't ask guests to remove their shoes on my boat or in my home. They are guests. Most would remove their shoes if they are muddy excessively dirty.

We don't have a lot of guests and most of the ones we do have are boaters with their own boats so they know how to act on a boat.
 
I ask the Coasties to remove their combat boots before random inspection boarding but the response always involves "lock and load" which trumps scuff mark concerns anyday.

The only other folks I ask to remove footwear are those invitees I previously specifically asked to wear non-marking boat shoes who arrive wearing black waffle sole work boots and no supplies for themselves.

But that usually doesn't work either.
 
When we were on the river in smaller boats I required sneakers until we arrived at an anchorage or went skiing. Having seen accidents with flip flops when docking, I had to do it.
However with Freedom, people can board with shoes but if they want to go inside, the shoes stay behind and for good reason. It's not like we have room for a high powered vacuum.
 
As Sandy said, Coasties (and AUX under certain circumstances) are required to wear those Black Boots. When they're aboard, we're underway for specific CG business, and I don't even mention the footwear issue. For routine missions we can wear boots or Sperry-style boat shoes, and I request those. That said, I don't make an issue if somebody still wants to wear boots.
 
j-d - Why do they wear the boots? I can't think of anything worse on their feet if they fall in the drink.
 
Depends on the day of the week.

On Topless Tuesdays, women are required to wear go go boots.

I honestly don't mind cleaning the black heel marks off the deck, or the headliner.

Swingin Saturdays - all clothing is optional.

I guess because the Uniform Manual says to with Operational Dress Uniform (ODU).... The Rationale? I think they feel that Active Duty members never know what they'll run into next. For example, in launching a boat from a cutter they're required to wear safety toes. Used to specify Steel, now they've gone to Composite. Any buoy deck activity is hazardous. Also, every CG boat has what I'll call an "abrasive deck." It's so gritty you'd probably rip the knee out of your pants if you skidded on it. And it's murder on those boot soles too. A $100+ pair of boots don't last long. I just bought a pair of Bates Ultralights with Composite and side zipper. Amazing how light and how actually comfortable they actually are. I still feel a little like I'm in clown feet.
I agree that we don't need to try and swim with boots on. I just bought a pair of Mayport Nikes

and the vendor encouraged me to get a pair I could kick off easily if I went overboard.
Yet there's an account of a commercial fisherman who fell overboard at night while rearranging coolers on the deck. No life jacket, middle of the night, rest of crew asleep, boat on autopilot to the fishing grounds. Stayed afloat most of a day with the boots inverted, holding air pockets, under his armpits.
