Atlantes Head Not Holding Water In Bowl

I have an A6 Atlantes with the wall switch and remote seawater pump installed in my 2001 houseboat and it has worked with no problems. A few months ago it stopped holding water most of the time, but not all of the time. The Atlantes is installed on an exterior wall about 2' above the waterline. It also has a Purasan unit installed below deck with the canister in the bathroom vanity.

I crawled in the hull to clean the seawater strainer. After doing so it would not pump any water into the bowl. I finally removed the outlet line from the pump and blew into it and it was blocked or my breath was not sufficient to open the check valve. So I suspected the T-Check valve that was installed between the pump and Atlantes. While removing the ball from the check valve the nipple on the check valve going to the canister fell off. Not having a spare I removed the T check valve and installed a straight connector and and it pumps water in the bowl although nothing is goint to the canister now.

So, back to same situation. Sometime the bowl holds water and some time it doesnt.

Any help would be appreciated.

Rick

The head needs to have a vented loop added to the discharge line, between the toilet and the holding tank, with the top of the loop higher than the top of the toilet bowl. This will stop the water from draining or siphoning out between flushes - and is the only way to ensure that the toilet holds water. If there is already a vented loop installed there, check that the vent on it isn't clogged. If the vent is clogged, the loop won't work, and water will still drain or siphon out between flushes.

Yeah I know, it "used to" hold water without having a vented loop installed. Sometimes when the joker valve is new and seals tightly, the head will hold water for a few months. But that is only a side benefit. The purpose of the joker valve IS NOT to hold water in the bowl between flushes. In fact, its purpose is just the opposite. It is there to stop water from backing up into the toilet bowl should you develop a partial clog farther down the line.

Thanks for your reply Vic. I am not sure if it has a vented loop or not. The boat builder has installed hundreds of these so I assume it was installed properly. I just thought it interesting that it worked fine for 7 years then all of the sudden stopped holding water. There is a small vent out the side of the hull below the floor level with the same size clear tubing used in the rest of the Purasan system. I wonder if this vents the Purasan or a vent from the head?

It "could be" the vent from the head; Purasan isn't normally vented unless it is mounted below the waterline of the boat.

Thanks Vic. I will check the thru hull fitting to see if it might be plugged by a spider or mud dauber.
