ATT: Walter.....

I third it .....Walters MONEY...

Don,
Sorry to keep going back to this but were the repairs expected???

Why all chain windles? Id think it would be noisey over nite. Chain clank....

Rob

Rob.....yes...I had a tranny cooler leak last season...and almost killed my tranny....so I planned to do ALL my coolers & exchangers... over the winter....Its only $2800.00+ labor...... no big deal.

I have all rope windlass (no chain at all ) now.....and it does NOT hold.....so I need to make a change to chain/rope.

Try just splicing a length of chain between the anchor and the line. You'd be amazed at how much better the anchor will hold with the weight of the chain holding it at a shallower angle.

Uhhh Im not the guy with the 700,000.00 boat....

I want your money. :}

Walter

Rich..... I would do that.....but theres no room between the windlass and the anchor to splice in chain. It's a Good model #500 all rope. I'm going to replace it with the Good model #850 combo rope & chain.

HOLLY CRAP..............$700K. I could have bought a fleet of used boats........

Don,
My .02 - I originally had 6ft of chain and it didn't hold that well. It was much better when I went to 20ft.

Thanks for that info Mark.......when I order the new Good windlass I was thinking about going with 25' of chain and the rest rope. I'm using a 35lb plow anchor..... I hope it all works together.

Yeah Don, the rich guys (Rob) always want to make it like the poor guys (me) have all the money. The toys do not lie..... I rest my case....:}

Walter

Walter, I'll bet you have more beer on board than Rob does!!

Hogan wins...

Don,
Im sorry from ur post i thought u were going with all chain.... My bad

Walt,
Give it up buddy.... I hear things.....

That searay is a steal.... ( dons link )

Ok no one laugh... Where's the tranny cooler???

Don i need pic's

Rob

Rob...... If I put 250' of chain in my anchor locker.....my props would be out of the water.
The tranny cooler is cut into the raw water inlet hose....and has 2 lines to the tranny for fluid..

Its not the type of cooler your thinking of...........

: 0.. so no beer there hugh.... damn.....

Im curious if an all chain rode is as noisy as i think it would be .... ( the constant tension and slack on the chain I would think would transfer to the cabin )

Anyway.... U have to get a colored rode. Meaning that every 10 or so feet the rode changes color. I got those stupid tags every ten feet. But i still have to count them , I cant read them from the helm... and yes the colors ...... I think im going color blind...

I know i got issues...

Rob

Yeah.....the dyed rode is whats on the boat now ....with a sticker on the helm to identify the length in colors. I think the chain/rope is also dyed colors.

Bad if your color blind..............

Just remember, the added weight of an all chain rode will mean you won't be able to carry as much beer and booze. So now I ask you, all chain rode/booze. Rope and chain combo is looking like a pretty good idea now, isn't it!!!!

I have all chain, first boat I ever had that had this. I beielve I have 150' of chain. I have an anchor that is pitful ....but it sets (most of the time) on the first try. I have heard that all chain is not good. What I have heard is this type of setup has no flex and can damage your boat in rough seas.

Walter

"Ok no one laugh... Where's the tranny cooler???"

Its when you leave for work and till you get home.... Jimmy told me that....... PS nice tranny.........Yeah " I have heard things too"

Walter

Sometimes with all chain rodes a length of nylon line is connected to the chain at some point and tied to the cleat on the bow to absorb some of the shock, and a little extra chain is let out so it goes slack. If I find an example online I'll post it.

I use 20' of chain and never really have any problems.

I want to add more chain. Anyone ever use these split rings? I see them out there. Was gonna add a split ring and more chain so I don't have to redo the splice.

The other issue with all chain is you can't cut the rope in a hurry if there is a need to, like stuck anchor. You would have to run out all the chain and drop it.

My boat expenses this year besides the normal maintenance, I need to a new power steering pump and I want to add the floscan I bought.

Other than that, I am going to shoot for a mid-april launch!
