Being a 36 ft.D/C Mainship owner. What size system do you have on your boat ? I am thinking a 275 cu/ft. would do it ?? Am I short changing myself ?

Al

i thought you were never supposed to use TWO fireboys in one compartment as one could go off but not be sufficient to completly kill the fire and then one the second one goes off, it's not sufficient enough? something about them not going off at the same time, or is there a way to link them to fire off at the same time?

Sorry its taken so long to reply! Its getting very busy for me now with the start of the new season.

Lou R, They must have changed the model #. If you go to the FireBoy site there is a table which will help you chose what you need.

Pascal, There is an over ride system to deploy both units if needed. I have seen many vessels with this type setup. It makes good sense to me to have a number of units in case one fails.

so, you are saying that each system should be sized for the compartment and just add a second one for redundancy? ex, put TWO 500cuft bottles in a 500cuft ER not two 250Cuft system.

just trying to clarify in case someone about to add a fixed system read this... I dont' think a 500cuft ER with two 250cuft would pass survey...

Ok, Here you go.

ABYC Standard 4.7.8.4 A system with multiple cylinders shall
operate to discharge all cylinders simultaneously and shall
be specifically engineered for its application(s).

4.7.8.5 If more than one system is installed in a
hazard space, each system shall be capable of individually
protecting the space.

4.7.8.6 For requirements not specified in this
standard, the requirements of NFPA 12, 12A, 12B, or 2001,
shall apply.

how do you link standard bottles (Fireboy for instance) to discharge simultaneously? is it possible?

With the FireBoy systems, you have to install a Manual / Automatic type cable to be able to discharge one or both at the same time. There are other systems that can be linked together with pluming and zone type triggers for larger vessels.

Al, I came up with 400 cu/ft. for our 36 Mainship D/C. Actually, 275 cu/ft fireboy would really do. ( Engine, fuel tanks, and generator) take up alot of volume Not to short change myself but I really do not want to spend money thats not necessary. What do you see in boats our size ??? I want to do whats right.

Lou R.

Lou, What i see in most cases is two 1301 FireBoy automatics. Sorry about 3701 that was a mistake! Both are mounted on the support beams for the salon floor, by each engine.
