What kind of anchor does every one use for a back anchor. I'm using one of those collapsble type ones, although I am not sure about its holding capability. Anyone got any input?

for a day stern anchor, a small Danforth type works well for me. However, I'm in sand only.

Scott, a Danforth or Fortress is the best bet for a stern anchor.

A couple of reasons.

First the Fortress can fold and store easier in your locker. It is also fairly light. However, it is a bit more expensive.

The Danforth is heavier and holds well in most conditions as a stern anchor (as opposed to a bow main anchor). It also stores sort of well, but much better than a Bruce or Delta.

Note: both anchors (especially the Danforth) will tend to skip in weedy conditions commonly found in GB around Beaulsoliel Island and so on.

On the assumption that you currently have a Danforth as a main anchor, change it out for a Bruce (or Delta) and then use your original Danforth as a stern anchor.

The Bruce or Delta will hold much better in most conditions you are going to see including Thorah Island which can have a rocky / boulder bottom but equally well in sand bottoms.

HI Greg:
The Sea Ray came with a Delta type anchor. I still have the Bruce I had on the Regal 256. But I did buy one of those portable anchors the looks like a grappling hook but I am not that confident in it for overnighting. For day anchoring it is fine. Just wondering what others had found.

I use a Delta 22 pounder as a primary anchor and a tiny 4.4 lb Bruce stern anchor. It can be kedged (tossed) easily and grabs well every time. It also stores easily in my livewell.

Canada (for old times sake),

What size Bruce anchor do you use for your main anchor? We have the same boat, so I may switch to that. The next size up Fortress anchor was too big for the front.

Thanks,

I have a fortress full size anchor as my spare and stern anchor.

Speaking of stern anchors, I have always been afraid to use a stern anchor if I am on the hook overnight and running the genny. I have always thought that the boat would be better if I allowed it the swing into the breeze so that any genny fumes would be blown away from the cabin. Am I being to paranoid about the whole carbon fume thing?

You are never too paranoid with the fumes. I would not run the gas genny with a stern anchor out. Was at anchor with somebody with a gas genny and we had a stern anchor set. He only started it to run the microwave and that triggered my CO detectors.

Scott,
I think one of those grappling anchors would not be that useful in the areas in which we boat. You are principally looking for good holding conditions in sand and mud, and to a lesser extent in rock (when up in the Bay). I use a full size Fortress. I cost a little more, but at ~$500 (for my boat) is still relatively inexpensive next to the cost of the boat.

Hi Paul:
I think for now I will bring along the bruce I used last year as on the bow of the 256 and just use that for a stern anchor. It hooks up really nice. The only down side is the storage issue.
