We haven't been there in a couple of years but we headed out on Wednesday, July 26 and docked at Payne's, our favorite place from years past. We noted that BI is getting crowded with ferry passengers but it was still fun to hang out for a few days. Thursday evening, "General" was wedged in in front of us. To those who frequent Payne's, you'll know her as a 1950, 100-ton Army Utility Tug, converted to "Yacht Service." She is docked in Norwalk and it seems, visits frequently. The crew wedged her in in front of us and we got a chance to talk to her Captain, a true boating character. It's nice to know that not everyone has an ordinary boat.
Friday morning, we headed out for Greenport to attend a good friend's 70th birthday party. The wind was running at 20 kts or better and was fron the southwest, not good for us. I slowed down and we banged and slammed though the whitetcaps for 33 miles to Orient Point Light, all with less than a mile visibility. Even Gardiner's Bay was blowing - no sailboats at all.
We had a nice time in Greenport, as we always do. It was just a 127 mile trip with good old boat.
Somehow, it makes the price a gas worthwhile.
