Famous case back east...I forget the state...Virginia maybe, put a luxury tax on yachts. The liberals stuck it to the rich people with big boats.
You guessed it, the factory moved across the state line. Unemployment went up.
I kid you not, while appraising this ladies mansion in the Fabulous Forties, she was in the kitchen watching TV. She lamented her husband's passing and how she had nothing to do now, etc. So I paid my respects, if you will, and then she said we don't pay enough taxes. It was a welfare thing on the Radio. I told her I paid too many. I still had two kids to get through college and so on. She said something else that I couldn't hear, but I told her, in a kind, respectful way that if she truly felt like we weren't paying enough taxes, she could send a check to the IRS anytime, they would gratefully accept it. She got mad and said that wasn't what she meant. I knew what she meant, I wasn't paying enough taxes. Grrrrrrr.
Anyway, I paid the state a huge chunk and I paid it a month early. HUGE mistake. They lost it. I had a receipt from them for the letter and I could produce the check, so they ate crow. But not before I got a nasty letter saying I was overdue and they were going to charge me penalty and interest...threat....threat...threat. I told them I would send copies of my paperwork to the Governor and they could discuss it with him. There was NO
form for paying my taxes a month early. I did not want to risk it being late. But I was working for the State at that time and felt like I owed them something I guess.
Rush Limbaugh, while in Sacramento I think, read a supply side letter of economics and the local libs were upset. Because John F. Kennedy wrote it. Go figure. We pay sales taxes when we buy it, then we pay property taxes too. THAT sucks.
