What causes a backfire in a carbureted engine? Yesterday, both engines ran smoothly while getting on plane, on plane, and getting off plane. Ran smooth and no backfires.
Since I didn't want to get back too fast (it was a great day on the water), I throttled back to 2,600 RPMs which just keeps me on plane. I did this while going into a 10-15kt. wind with a slight chop. It backfired only once. My sweet spot (range) for both engines is 2,900 to 3,100 rpms. Was I just straining the engine a little at 2,600 and this caused the backfire?
They are twin inboard 454s running a 1987 33ft. Cruisers, Inc.
