It wasn't a good day for marinas in KY & TN on Lake Cumberland & Dale Hollow Lakes...The pictures below are from Grider Hill on Cumberland. about half dozen marinas had roofs come down

Guess it's not quite as bad as the recent fires. If I had to categorize this stuff: LACK OF MAINTENANCE.

8-10 inches of snow Monday & Tuesday, then Friday night and Saturday rain

Same cause at Georgetown and Bohemia Bay in MD back in 2010.
I feel for them

A little.
Many marina's in these Southern states were built back when 8-10" of snow wasn't so common. Places that are full of winterized boats, securely tied to the docks, are much less likely to tip as the boats prevent tipping on the snow loaded side.
If the snow were to build up evenly on both sides of the roof, and stay that way tipping wouldn't happen.
BUT, as weather events unfold, the sun comes out, driving drains occur (either or) then one side of the roof melts faster than the other, the snow slides off and suddenly you have hundreds or thousands of lbs of snow on one side and none on the other side to balance.
And there is the recipe for the heavy side to tip the entire dock.
Yes you can try and hire crews to go up on a metal roof, covered with snow and ice, but that is really dangerous. But has been done.
Some have tried heating the metal from underneath, no luck. Also hosing the roof with water. . . .same result. Cold sheet metal just can't be heated in the winter.
It is what it is.

My response was harsh but appropriate for a stupid comment from someone who obviously did not know what he as talking about. His comment was as appropriate as if I had responded to a report of hurricane damage to say it obviously resulted from a shoddy dock.

As BarrenRiver noted, the area suffered a bad combination of weather. Several inches of snow fell overnight, which normally would not be bad. But, it was on top of ice from a storm earlier in the week. Worse, though, the snow later switched to cold rain early Saturday. That made the snow a very heavy slush which overloaded the roofs and floating dock structures. Some of the docks affected were fairly new and from reputable builders but still went down.

The problem was probably compounded by happening early on a Saturday, when many marinas in the area are closed this time of year. Several operators tried to get staff in to help relieve the loads, but that was compounded by bad road conditions and marinas often at the bottom of VERY hilly terrain making travel very dangerous. Plus, once staff were there, as noted, the process of removing the snow from a slick metal roof is dangerous too.

The problem seems to have gotten worse since BarrenRiver first reported. On Norris Lake in Tennessee, alone, at least 10 marinas suffered terrible damage. Plus, as noted, Dale Hollow and Lake Cumberland had damage too.

Fortunately, there do not appear to be reports of injuries. But, it is a sad time for dozens of marina operators and hundreds of boat owners.

A little sympathy from fellow boat owners would be appropriate (certainly more than ignorant comments from the uninformed).

J-D 's comment may be wrong or misguided but it is his opinion. Why take it as a personal insult? Explain the facts and move on. No reason to be so dramatic.
Jim

In my opinion, calling someone an idiot is not an appropriate comment. An explanation of what you think may have caused the damage is an appropriate comment.

tnvol, knowing J-D personally, as I do, your comment is off the chart rude and waaaaaay out of line.

I can assure you JD is no idiot. I know JD and his wife you're way out of line.....

You attributed the issue to AND provided reasons why there was lack of maintenance...sounds like you're agreement with j-d.

Why the harsh words.

No, I do not know J-D. He may be a fine and knowledgeable person. But, his response on this thread was simply stupid and ignorant. Moreover, it was insulting to the poor marina operators and boat owners who have suffered a terrible loss by suggesting the damage was sustained because of bad marina operators. It was an unexpected weather disaster - no more obviously the result of "lack of maintenance" than boat or dock damage suffered during a hurricane. His flippant comment was entirely inaccurate and inappropriate.

I am much more often a lurker than a poster and did not chime in here to start a fight or attack a person. However, I did see a need to counter a very inappropriate remark.

To be fair, perhaps I should not criticize the person, but his comment was dumb and insulting. Defend him if you want, but no rational person can defend his comment. I will stand by that.

You really need to go back to being a "lurker", you are a dismal failure as a "poster".

I emphatically Disagree -
i have followed J-D's comments for many years, and assume him to be a gentleman and thoughtful boater.
HOWEVER, the assertion that Lack of Maintenance was at fault assumes negligence by its connotation.
Such is not the case for reasons explained, and many other situations beyond reasonable control . . .
In my experience cruising much of the US east of the MS R, marinas and boats in this area are at least as well maintained as elsewhere, if not better.
This was a bout of epoch severe weather for this area, devastating and costly to the boating arena and many others.
Let's give the benefit of doubt - especially from those who have not populated this boating area!
I don't recall Lack of Maintenance being invoked in assessing the tragic boating losses accompanying Sandy recently.
Let's get back on track . . .
Collegially,
John

Maybe you had a weak moment. Why don't you own up to it. You made a direct personal attack, plain and simple and now your trying to justify it because you somehow felt insulted in something other than a direct personal attack.

Don't like his conclusion, fine. I would maybe support your position, and I'm sure the backwoods days of years gone by are not so prevalent, but then again I really did have a second cousin preacher of the area who had to tie himself into a tree while squirrel hunting lest all 375 pounds of him fall out when he fell asleep, Again. Maybe it's just that deep seated regional inferiority complex showing. I suspect if I walked into a bar and shouted "hey idiot" I'd know just exactly who was going to self select, turn on his barstool and get all up and offended.

Try to be part of that "other" traditional gentleman of the area who might be just a tad bit wiser and would never be at such a loss of good manners and tact.

Y'all have a nice day now, won't ya?
