Badly corroded anchor

I admit to not using the anchor for a long time and it was fortunate that I had not since it has badly corroded. It is hidden under the bow pulpit and the shaft and chain visible from the top look good. The plow however is destroyed.

With two Danforths and one CQR on pulpits over a longer time I have never seen a similar failure.

I think that you will find that it is just surface rust and this anchor could be pounded with a hammer with no problem.

Looks a lot worse than that from where I'm sitting..

Lots of EVERYTHING knock offs out there. That anchor looks like a knock off zinc I replaced two years ago. There was more air in the thing than zinc.
 
It was supposed to be a real delta. Very pricy at west marine. Had delta labels until a while ago.
Looks delaminating to me, I doubt a hammer will do anything but turn it to dust.

Delta claims a lifetime warranty against breaking but wont do anything about rust.

Which begs the question.... Is WM selling knock offs? Do they know?
 
This is indeed well beyond surface rust.

I often see anchors like this in this conditions on pulpits...
 
Looks to me like galvanic corrosion. I don't see a bonding wire anywhere.
 
A galvanized anchor is a zinc. Plus a zinc doesn't do any good in air. Is that an all chain rode? What does the chain look like? What is between the anchor and the chain? Shame on you for letting it get that bad, but still it would be worth trying to take it back or at least show some pics to Lewmar.
 
Yes, embarrassing, out of sight out of mind.

The chain, shackle And shaft of the anchor all visible from the top are in fine shape. Only the plow area is destroyed. Leewmar said they didnt cover rust . I sent theme pix but have no response.
Since only the plow part is bad I think it is simply failure of the galvanizing, either from wear or poor galvanizing.
I am surprised because this is the first of many anchors I have owned to fail like this, so badly. I used danforths to moor for months at a time and never saw anything like this.

Bonding wire or zinc on an anchor that sits out of the water??

This is not galvanic corrosion, it s just plain steel rust because the galvaniEd finish failed.

I usually rinse the chain and anchor with fresh water after use but on a delta it woudl be very hard to rinse the underside, probably what happened here
