Well Bob iam glad you are back home safe and sound. Don here How old are you to make a trip like that by yourself??? Im 68 am good ,BUT dont think i do that just me. DON

I'm not sure I understand your point. I'm 63 and have been boating by myself all my life, owning my first boat at age 13.

There was never any "danger" factor in this trip at all. Just really uncomfortable with the heat and that was the reason for my early return.

So far this year I have made trips from Palm Coast, FL to Charleston, SC and back; a trip from Palm Coast to Savannah and back; a trip to Stuart fL and across the Okeechobee Waterway and back; and this was my second trip to the Bahamas for the year. You can bet that, as soon as I get a new A/C and generator installed plans for my next trip to wherever it may be, will begin. :)

If the sound shield can be removed based on design or construction leaks should not be an issue. They usually make themselves obvious given the genny is mounted in a pan that has mountings for the side panels.

Given this photo it looks like most of the important stuff is under the opening. Check the other side of the genny for failure points but it looks like the back half lifts off also. As long as you don't mount it somewhere under an obstruction it could be a good fit for you? Oil filter and fuel filter locations are important.

Yes, both halves are removable. Plus, since my little Yanmars are so small I have plenty of space and will have very easy access to both sides of the genny as well as oil and fuel filters.

Ordered the gen today.

the only downside to sound shields isnt' the heat build up it's that it makes is harder to spot problems (leaks, etc...). obvioulsy you want to open it up before starting it but when doing ER check underway it can be hard to go and open it up with the mains running.

If the mains are running I just leave a panel off to make the check faster and easier.

You can just put Lexan panels for widows in the shield. Or replace an entire panel with Lexan. If you want you can get fancy with it and add lights. :-)

Couldn't resist a quick search on "Great Issac Light" and discovered this gem:

West Indies Pilot, by the U S Hydrographic office, 1918

It is public domain, and a scan of the book is freely downloadable as a PDF.

It references Great Issac Light and surrounds...

Bob,

Did you order a gensep for the exhaust?

Since I visited the Great Isaac Light back in June I've been doing a lot of reading about it. This time I spent much more time actually on the island as well as a good bit of SCUBA diving around it. I find it fascinating. The Great Isaac, Hen & Chickens and the Gingerbread Grounds are all excellent fishing and diving sites and my next trip will surely include a stop there.

Surprisingly, even though it is so close to Bimini, in the two days I spent there this last trip I saw only one other boat.

So far I have found evidence of two wrecks as well as a couple of veru old anchors near Hen & Chickens and great Isaac that are not on any charts I can find.

Pretty neat and interesting place. Very rugged but also very interesting.

All the gen thing that need to be checked are on one side of the generator. Take a good look at that when deciding where to put it and how to orient it. I installed generators with and without sound shields, no heating problems reported. I put a 12.5kw in a 47 Viking SF with out a sound shield. He has some shielding inthe engine room, but not much. When it is running and under load, it sounds like a sewing machine running. a 3.5 in a trawler with no sound shield couldnt be heard at all. In fact you could hear the exhaust splash from in the salon better than you could the genny, and it wasnt loud, more like reassuring.

BOB Thanks for getting back to me.Iam 68 but look 60 lol. Like to talk to you about your trip there, can you e-mail me at rickadorb2@gr5tbellsouth.net Thanks DON

E-Mail is rickadorb2@gr5tbellsouth.net Dont know where all that came from Don

Don,

This forum puts the "rb2rb2" stuff on either side of the "at sign" automatically to keep spammers from harvesting e-mail addresses. We'll all assume you meant rickador at bellsouth.net unless you say otherwise.

Bob, when's your window look like for next spring? I think this time while we'll again launch in Ft. Pierce (due to trailer service in Vero) we'll take the ICW for a ways instead of crossing from that far north. I've had my fill of the Abacos for a while so I'm really hoping to make the hop to Bimini and then continue south.

Right now my plan is to leave June 1st, head south to Lake Worth and cross over to West End. From there straight to either Nassau or Chub then on down to Exumas.

From there no plan except I will spend a few days around Bimini on the tail end of the trip.

At least that's my plan as of now. :)

We've been going in May for the past few years, but have thought about pushing it to June some. We'll have to keep in touch and see if we can't coordinate something. It would be nice to have a BE ground head to the Exumas.

Dan...thoughts...???

May often tends to still be quite windy and still have winds with a North element so I like to plan for June.

Plus, my wife is leaving for a month in Thailand the end of May so I need to be here to get her to the airport, then I'm free to leave on June 1st as weather permits.

You're right, a BE round up in the Exumas (or wherever) would be LOTS of fun. Let's work it out.

Bob

Indeed. I keep wanting to get there as well. We have to see what happens when we refloat Freedom. We have new seals, and more water maker work again. The engines get mechanical guages for the ride to Ft. Lauderdale. If they act up, oh well... If we are off to a late start that would only help us get there for June instead of leaving the Bahamas earlier.
I like the idea of June because it seems like the weather lays down more by then.

MAXMAN And RBBENTON YES I DO MEAN RICKADO AT THE REST OF IT. THANKS FOR THE HELP. I HOPE BOB GETS IT NOW AND GETS BACK TO ME WHEN HE CAN DON
