For the last 3 years, we've used the Eastern shore for our marina needs. Since we live in a rural area near Lancaster, PA, we are now looking to move the boat to the city for this summer - kind of like a reverse commute. It looks like we are zooming in on Anchorage Marina, but I'd like to hear folks' opinions of this marina and other Baltimore possibilities. Our wants are a pool, good cell phone coverage, wireless access, close shopping and not to far into the inner harbor - that ride out to the bay can get old fast. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Anchorage or Baltimore Marine Center would be your best bet if you are interested in staying close to the 6 mph buoy. I heard BMC parking garage is pretty nice now but I haven't seen it personally.

Geri and Dave: We were going to buy one of the slips at the Anchorage, but after reading some of the arguments between the owners, and the parking situation,no matter if you are an owner, or leasee, we opted to pass. I would go to BMC if there was a choice.

You could look at marinas just south of the Key bridge, like off Stony or Rock Creeks. We're at Maryland Yacht Club off Rock Creek. Depending on your speed, you're not far from downtown (we just went last weekend...yes, January boating ROCKS!). We cruise at 17 knots, and it's about 40 minutes. We've got a pool (never use it, always out somewhere since it only takes about 15 or so minutes to exit the river and get to the bay) and a restaurant on location. A good number of other restaurants close by car or boat. Local marine stores are close, as well as some chain stores. There's a number of supermarkets about 10 minutes by car. I suppose it just depends if you want to be situated downtown all the time or not.

Mixman, that's an idea, but we literally live in the sticks now and are kind of looking forward to city life on the boat for 6 months. We may change our mind when we're there in August, though. :) How long would it take to drive downtown?

Dusty, where did you get all that info on AM? I have googled and googled and can't come up with anything!

To drive from where our boat is (Pasadena) to downtown Baltimore? About half an hour.

I've just noticed your post. Perhaps you have already made a decision but I'll chime in anyway. I've been at the Baltimore marine center for years. No marina is perfect but over the last 2 years the management is trying pretty hard to get there. Parking was a problem in the past but they resolved it last year by giving us slip holders garage parking. They have all the amenities you would expect, pool, bathrooms, showers, dock hands, beer, ice fuel etc... I think prices are competitive with AM, IHE. There are allot of folks from PA and one of our good friends on N dock drive down from Lancaster also. Canton and Fells point are easy walks, Inner harbor- well if we go we’ll take the boat or a dink. They also offer 3 free haul-outs and pressure washes as part of the slip agreement. That’s been a big convenience. Best of luck!

BLank, thanks. We came to the same conclusions you did. The only thing is that the only slips available for 2008 were waaaaay out on J, K, or L - quite a distance when you look at it. I just had some ankle surgery this year that has me with limited walking ability, so we are a little leery of that distance. However, the place is terrific. The prices are higher by about $700, but the extras they throw in more than make up the difference - free towing anywhere on the bay, free healthclub, 3 haulouts, free cable, free month if you sign by March. Quite a nice deal and they are VERY service-oriented. The woman we spoke with last weekend when we visited was really nice and helpful and the marina manager even called us to follow up. Nice to see that in this day and age. I feel like a commercial for BMC, but it really was nice.
Slips at Anchorage are a bit closer to the mainland and the walk right cross the street to the Safeway, restaurants, and the shops is appealing for the winter months. So... we are going to try it this year while I recuperate. Maybe next year we'll make the move up Boston.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Boy, that's a funny group. It does sound like there's parking challenges, but that is life in the city....

We're off to Cabo and Mazlatan in 3 weeks out of San Diego. I can't wait....

Thanks, Dusty!!

Try Henderson's Wharf in Fells Point. I think you will find the parking situation much better and the cost a little less. Plus they do half year slips.
