I keep my boat at Timber Point East Marina in Great River. Same slip as last year and same bottom paint as well. Had hardly any barnicles on my running gear and the tabs last year. I noticed some growth after just 2 weeks. I also see some on some other boats in the marina as well. What could be causing this?

Timber Point Marina .....was our secret little hang out. We have gone there for years.....loved that place.

This happened to me in Babylon last season, see link I have attached. But because of knee surgery this year, I am not ready to be doing lines, loading the boat etc. So I am expecting the same this year when I can finally use the boat. I am hoping for my first run MM day Weekend, if not, my knee will tell me when… But I will expect the same issue with barnacles. I rather do a test run first before the short haul for bottom painting, zincs etc.

Good luck,

Brad

Brad,
Thanks for your post from last year. The guys from Babylon Marine are great...I bought my Mako from Charlie in December. Also thanks for providing the correct spelling of barnacle, LOL. Are you planning to go to Atlantique on Memorial Day? I can't wait! Hope the knee feels better.

I saw the same on my trim tabs, no answer to why though?? It aslso is not like I haven't run the boat, I am in Lindenhurst.

Yup the plan is to go to Atlantique, it is my Bday weekend 5/27 and that has been tradition for years to head over and then do a water taxi to OB for dinner. But this year it may be on hold a few weeks.

I went to the boat today to load some stuff on and to my surprise, someone, maybe a transient used the end of my stern line that is crisscrossed on my dock cleats for their boat. I now have two boats on one cleat. It went down though their transom to a inside cockpit cleat. so I could not even get on to untie. My knee/leg is still not strong enough to navigate stepping though and over the lines so I went home. Man was I ticked off. Will call the marina in the AM to see what bone head did that.

Back to the barnacles, I noticed a lot of fresh young growth along the bulkheads. This going to be one hauling and scraping season.

Our first trip out... It was great to be on the boat on my Birthday weekend. It is a late start for Linda and I, but was a beautiful start to the season anyway. I did not think with my knee surgery I would be able to do some of the things I did, but it all worked out.

The boat ran good, but sluggish since I have not hauled and bottom washed / painted etc. I know the buildup is there with all kinds of growth, including barnacles. When we first headed out in the AM we were on the fence to go to Atlantique or Watch hill, but when I could only reach 1/2-2/3 of my running speed at 3400, I decided not to push it and headed to the closer Atlantique.

Also, when I went to start my Generator it was not pumping water, but did a few weeks back. I have a new impeller in there so I am hoping it is just barnacles over my intake, could it be that simple ?

I hope our Marina can fit us in this week for the short haul.

Brad.....think....Buck Algonquin intake covers....best $75 bucks I ever spent.....no more short hauls.

Thanks Don, if I find out that the SB strainers, or my current intake covers is the problem, I will consider that.. Where do you get them ?

Brad......I had my mechanic get them from his marine supplier. They come in 2 sizes. Large for the engine intakes and smaller for the A/C and Gen. intakes. One screw ....and the screens slide out for easy cleaning up on the platform.....they worked well.

So I haven't used the boat since Memorial Day Weekend. I get my family and my mother and father in-law down to the boat at 10 AM to go to Atlantique for the day. I couldn't get the boat on plane. 9 knots at 3200 rpm. It takes us 1 hour to get there. I spoke to a few other people at Timber Point East marina and they are having the same problem with barnacles. This is on top of the trim pump for the outboard on my CC failing. I guess it could be worse. It was still a great day at the beach.

Interesting, our boat has been sitting for about 2 weeks in Greens Creek just east of timber point. Head down the river yesterday and go to get on plane.....tough to get up, needs full throttle, back off and try to back down in case we caught something. No difference...long story short, just my props, completly fouled with barnicles in 2 weeks. Out drives clear with no growth, they're sprayed, the stainless props, filled..Never seen that before. Need to clean them up before our next run.

If anyone at The Anchorage needs a scrape, let me know. Just say you think there is a bottle of beer stuck under your tabs, and I'll have my tank on and dive in a heartbeat. :)

I short hauled the boat last night and was expecting the props to be loaded. There wasn't as many barnacles as I thought there was going to be. Each blade was covered with all small barnacles but not that heavy. The shafts were covered as well but that's it. None on the tabs or engine strainers. If anyone needs to short haul call All Island Marine Transport. They charged me $100. Most marinas were charging $9 to $10 per foot. Saved myself $240...good for 1/4 tank of gas. Boat got up on plane with no problem.
