Battery isolator

Look at the various BlueSea ACR's they perform alternative source charging like an isolator but with -0- voltage drop. The high current units will or can be latched on to aid in parallel starting of even large gas engines and smaller diesels. ACR = Automatic Charge Relay.

Yes! I still am using an ( 70A Guest?)isolator to the 2nd (stbd engine starting) & 3rd(house) batteries . Has always worked great and the minor voltage drop has never been any kind of problem in the 20 yrs since it was installed.
 
I'm with Sandy, still using (2) 70 amp isolators, using 3 of the 4 outputs. Battery 1 for the starter, Battery 2 Non-Electronic House, Battery 3 Electronic loads. It's been trouble free since installation in Spring 1996.
 
I misspoke, what I meant to say is, why would anyone install an isolator new in a battery system when you (like Billy said above) can install a relay that works better and is simple to install.

If they were installed on your boat from the factory and the isolators still work I would leave them be.
 
I know the silicon diode in the isolator has a 0.7 V drop but does that matter in real life? In theory you would want no voltage drop so the actual charging voltage shows up at the battery. But the alternators are not super precise pieces of equipment and I doubt it matters.
 
.07 volts might be the difference from a charge battery to a discharged battery. Especially if you need the battery to start your motor to get home.
