Somewhat off topic, but it seems everybody has his own theory...
i have a '93 28 Albin 28 T E with 2 batteries and a charger.

here's how i operate the switch. Please let me know if i'm screwing up,
.. at the dock ,shore power connected<
engine off.: battery switch: off.
charger: on.
D C main: off (the bilge pumps do operate in this configuration) ...
..
starting at the dock,
battery switch:# 2 (starting battery).
D C main: on. i leave shore power connected and the charger switch on.
(come to think of it ,i don't see a reason to ever turn off the charger)
....
.. prior to departing the dock,
shore power disconnected..
charger: i just leave it on.
battery switch: both.
(will both batteries charge if only one battery is selected?) ...
...
at anchor (engine not running, no shore power)<
battery switch: #1 (house power).. ...
...
starting at anchor,
battery switch: #2.
...
