Anyone interested in putting together/attending a BE round up at either the Norfolk Waterside marina or Portsmouth Marina sometime the summer 2010?

If I could wrap it around our vacation I would be interested in hooking up for a couple of days. Norfolk is about 175 miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge so it would be a haul for most people. Farthur North may work better for most folks who are on the bay. We are planning a trip south anyway so it really doesnt matter much to me.

sounds great, how about splitting the distance say north of Wolf trap around sting ray point the town of Urbanna is nice, good harbor and shops and a little nite life and doesn't have all the B.S. of P-town and Norfolk.

We would also be interested. Also comming from Bay Bridge area.....

We might be able to go, depending on the date. Norfolk/Portsmouth sounds like a good compromise between the Chesapeake boaters and the NC boaters.

Well, it sounds like we have a few takers. I would like to propose the weekend of July 17th and 18th. We can figure out the location later unless someone has an idea.

Hampton has a GREAT city dock. Concrete floaters with very reasonable rates. Anyway, I'm in.

I am OK with whatever people decide to go with. I just want to say that most of the chesapeake bay BE people are probably in the Middle to Northern Bay. It is a huge run to Norfolk for them, especially for a weekend run.
Many boats will cruise rb2@gr5t 18kts. and that is probably a 10-12 hr. run in good conditions. And allot of fuel. If we are going to travel that far then personally I would want a nice facility with things to do and see. I dont want to over pay however, I dont want the budget motel either.

I'm in, that's why urbanna might be good for everyone it's close to the middle of the bay for every one coming Md and Norfolk VA. and has a great basin and town docks fuel and water. with eating spots and shopping with in walk range. and they have one small hotel and b and b's

I think maybe we need to break this into two groups. Going to Urbanna is too far for anyone south of Hampton especially those of us in NC because we have to go thru some locks and they are only open at certain times. I will work to set up something in Norfolk for southern Bay/NC boaters. Would someone like to run with the Northern Bay round-up?

I am still OK with doing it in VA. but just want to make sure everyone can make that trip. It doesnt make sense to hold it there if people cant travel that far. How many do we have that would attend in VA.? Also, how many would not attend because it is in VA.? Lets try and get a count...
Lets just use the weekend of July 17th and 18th as a starter date and see who can attend. If we have to change the date later thats fine. What does everyone think?

I agree with Talexander 38 about Norfolk I don't much care for Waterside its long over due for some major renovation but Portsmouth is a great town with lots of good restaurants, kids science museums, and full of history. I think it would be a long haul from the upper bay for just a weekend. Hampton is also a nice town to cruise to a lot like Portsmouth, great bands play every weekend during the summer. Its also 5 minutes off the bay on the Hampton River and would save about 1 1/2 hours round trip from Norfork for people coming in from the north. I keep my boat at Bluewater Marina and think it would be more fun than Hampton city docks, it also has a Great restaurant ( Surf Rider) Pool & Bar. They also have floating docks and they will take you across the creek ( 2 minutes) to downtown Hampton. If you guys decide on Hampton and come up with the number of boats I will try to get better rates, they also have about 50 transients slips so space would not be a problem. I also agree that Urbanna is a nice little town but not much to do there in my opinion and also no pool at the city dock.

Correct on all points. I have only refueled at Bluewater, but can say it is the nines when it comes to marinas. Great staff attitude as well.

Do you think there would be enough transient slips that weekend?

I know if you book far enough in advance you can almost "own" the Hampton City Pier. Additionally, there is a Sheraton(?) or the like adjacent to the pier. Last year, cooking was permitted on the city pier if one did not want to go to a restaurant. Don't know if that has changed or not.

I'm good with either one.

I'm good with Hampton to, Never been there so it'll be a new place. Is there room to swing on the hook ? And any weekend works for me.

There was last year across from the City Pier. Don't know about the width outside the channel across from Bluewater though.

I rarely see anyone anchored on the Hampton river, not much water outside of the channel and also lots traffic coming & going.

Yes they have plenty of slips its very seldom is full unless something special is happening that week.

Or, if you have a good dinghy, Hampton Flats, including north of the channel, is a good anchorage in anything with a northern component , or light conditions. I have also seen boats anchored above the bridge on the Hampton River; too tight for me with all the traffic.

A BE get together is not special?!? I'm so hurt!!!!

So what is necessary to make it happen at BW.

Van, I spent 17 yrs down there and unless they have changed the landscape there is no way Norfolk is 175 miles from the bay bridge. I would give you 50 or 60 by river but it not 175. Maybe you had a typo.
