Fantastic day to be on the water. The kids and I left the dock this morning for a sightseeing trip in to the City. Couldn't ask for a better day for it. Great ride both ways.
Out early to do some crabbing or fishing tomorrow morning, whichever my son decides he'd rather do. Have to take advantage of the combination of great weather and no other commitments for the weekend.

Once I got to the Jones Inlet from my dock it took about an hour and a half to get to the Intrepid/Cruise Ship Pier area. I an through the Amity Channel heading towards the inlet which really shaves off a lot of time for me. The Ocean was really calm going there
It took about an hour and 45 minutes to get back to the Jones Inlet because it was starting to get a little choppy and I slowed down a bit.
Very easy run on a nice day. New York Harbor itself, and the lower part of the Hudson, was a little sloppy with the currents and wakes from all the ferries and pleasure boats, but not bad at all. I took it a little slower in there so as not to pound on the boat, but we were enjoying the sights and the kids were busy snapping selfies so it was no big deal.

We went to watch hill Friday. Was crowded and nice to see for a change.
By the way, they serve a brunch on Sunday which we did.
If you stay for brunch then you can stay in your slip till 1pm.
Since I wanted to catch high tide this worked out good.
Brunch is $22 a person but you save $30 in hourly dock charge from 10 to 1.
So not a bad deal.
We ended up staying till 2.
The hourly charge of $10 is also nice since you don't have to pay for a full day to get a few not hours out of a beautiful weekend.

we had 3 great days on the water. Friday we spent the day playing with the inflatable. Sat & Sun we spent at Watch Hill. The weather was great, and I got to meet some new people.

What can I say.
I don't want to post anything because I am not sure about The rules and policies, but here is what I know.
Basically, the marina policy is after 75% full, there are no more reservations, no wait lists, and all slips are first come first serve as long as you check in with dockmaster. So if you come in, and go to a day slip, your in a slip. There is no wait list. So any boat can grab a slip after checking in with the dock master. What seems baffling is if you see a slip open and you are in day slips, then the first boat to reach the dockmaster gets it, that is the rule, which on the surface sounds very dangerous and it is. Why no wait list? Well, they say it gets too hard to control and manage to find and locate the people, so say a slip opens and they are on the beach. So makes some sense.
What happened with us, is we knew this. We were told this. So our golden plan based on that policy, was to put a friend of mine in Rob(Robski’s) slip when he pulled out. We coordinated it perfect. But when we went to execute we were told there was a boat on A Dock waiting. This started a little battle for the slip. There was also other’s that wanted it.
In my view, the policy is wrong. There should be a wait list and boats on day slips should get priority, but they need to stay with their boat or give their cell # to dockmaster and they get a set amount of time to return to get the slip. No one should ever take a slip without checking in when the dockmaster is there!
In the end, we got the slip, but after I had some words with dockmaster, which I felt bad about, but the point was my friend drove a hour to get there, with a 3 year old kid because he knew he had a slip. He wouldn’t of come. In my view, make a policy and stick to it. Don’t go promising slips to one person and say first come first serve to others. They gave in because they said my friend was floating and other boat was all tied up with no one on it.

Yeah, sorry if I put you in a bad spot. Like I said, I think the wait list is a better way and friends should not be allowed to hand off slips to friends and dockmasters should be allowed to hand off slips to friends.
I also think all reservations would be better done online as the phone calling thing is getting old too. Took me over a hour to get thru Friday morning. Some of my friends it took 2 hours. Do it online. Limit the # of days in advance you can book. Limit total # of days in a row. And if you don't show by a set time, you lose the slip. Even the whole walking around trying to collect thing seems dated.

The Group Reservation Policy covers organized groups that would like to rendezvous, hold meetings, recreate, etc. while enjoying all that Watch Hill has to offer.
Group Reservation Policies:
•Group reservation policy maybe applied only to groups consisting of ten (10) or more vessels.
•Group reservations are only available for May, June (excludeing the last weekend), September and October.
•No group reservations can be made within 10 days of Memorial Day, the 4th of July or Labor Day.
The Group Reservation Policy allows the group’s leader to make reservations for the group’s vessels well in advance of the planned day of arrival. Advanced reservations allow the staff of Fire Island Concessions the opportunity to place vessels in appropriately sized slips as well the ability to keep your group within the same vicinity. As soon as you have a date in mind, please contact us at (631) 597-3109 or by email as this process can be time consuming and availability is limited. Fire Island Concessions will work closely with you to plan your group’s event. Please indicate whether you will require the services of the Pier Restaurant or any other accommodations for your group.
