I am getting my family into fishing and wondered where the best place to buy fishing equipment. Most of the fishing in the sacramento delta are salmon, steelhead, and strippers. Is there a brand of equipment that is recommended? How long of a rod should we start with.

Thanks for your help.

Rod & reel combos will cost you between $25 and $2500.

My advice is to start with a couple of $150 range combos. Not so cheap they break when you look at them, but not so expensive you can't afford them. The length depends on what species you will be fishing for and what pound test of line you will use. Generally the longer the rod, the greater feedback you will receive from nibblers. You will need to go to a sporting goods store instead of your local Wally-mart and you should get some good advice. Pick a good starter variety of weights and tackle. Don't buy the expensive gizmo tackle because they generally don't work. Again, the tackle depends on your game.

Actually WallyMart stocks and sells Ugly Sticks. I bagged a nice 9' job there for $35 which was $79 in all the mags.
Kids and wife. Maybe a 7'-8' Ugly Stick and you can pick up a spinning reel there as well for another $30. Get one that holds 20-30lb test.

Then as time goes by and you figure out who in the family is in, or out, you can buy them a nice Penn or Shimano Combo, which as Stephen said will cost you $150.

Just make sure if you have kids, say 3 of them, yo get them the SAME combo. If they are different and one catches 3 fish one day and the others don't they'll instantly blame the rig! Then you're stuck buying more!

You should start out with on a Charter and learn how the local fishing is done. At that point,
the type of gear you will be needing will be evident.
