Need some opinions on the best (not the most expensive) sunglasses. Here in Maine I go with some generic brand of polaroids but I'll be cruising in the Florida Keys this winter and need to be on the lookout for coral heads and shallow waters, etc. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Maui Jims. Hands down the best I have ever had, not cheap but the best

I like anything polarized even if they are cheap they still really cut down the glare on the water.

Maui Jim. To see the best contrast in the South Florida waters, go with the Maui Jim bronze lenses. All Maui jim's are polarized, but I seem to get better contrast with the bronze polarized over the gray polarized. If you don't go with Maui Jim, then Revo are pretty good, too.

Here is a photo I took of Alligator Reef off Islamorada in the Keys. This one was taken WITHOUT a good polarizer filter.

Compare it to this photo I took a few seconds later WITH a high quality multi-coated polarizer filter over the lens. The contrast is much better. This is how the water will look with Maui Jims, which are high quality multi-coated polarizd lenses. Don't cheap out on good quality polarized sunglasses. The difference in vision is no contest. Polarized lenses will also deepen the blue of the sky and make the clouds "pop out" better with more contrast.

Thanks Honora. I didn't know that about Costco having MJ's. It's usually hard to find MJ's much under full retail.

You're welcome Glenn. The Costco in Yonkers has an optometry dept.. I got mine (2 pair) there. They have both the black lens and the brown lens.

As everyone has said Maui Jims hands down. They also have great Customer service, send your broken glasses to them and if even close to the warranty time they fixem at just a $10 handling cost.

One thing about Polarized glasses is that they may make it hard to read some LCD displays.

I did not see Maui Jims nat our local Costco, but I did not look to hard. Did find Kirkland branded Serengeti glasses for $30. That are great

I used to think that I liked polarized. I wear prescription glasses so I got my last sunglasses polarized.

I did not know that I was going to run into problems reading some instruments digitized displays. Maybe it is only my current glasses, but it is hard to see my chart plotter with them on. I cannot see the digital display screen in my Acura MDX.

Very true but if you tilt your head to the side you can usually overcome that issue. Awkward but works in a pinch.

I have MJ's and a good pair of "glass" Ray Ban's and I like both. Oakley has styles that I like now and I hinted to my youngest daughter who works for Bass Pro that my birthday is coming up:) Has anyone tried Wiley X?

Maui Jims here too. I have had the same pair for ten years. They've been back to the factory twice for new lenses when I broke them. $65 and they come back rebuilt like new.

Wow, I've never seen such a consensus on a topic like this one. Maui J's it is!

I hate to be the oddball but Costa Del Mar 580's. I coulddn't believe the clarity when I put them on. The polirization is also pretty incredible when your looking out at the water. The fit for me is also excellent. They have some special rubber contact points on your nose and ears that help them grip to your face. They just won't fall of.

Costa's are also pretty good. But having owned both I'd go with MJ's.

I agree with Chessy on the Maui Jim/Bronze. They work great up here and in the Keys. You'll love 'em!

I use the Costa's also. I fish a lot and I also need reading glasses to tie knots in fishing lines.
Can't beat the Costa's in my opinion. I can see the fish very well, even in bright sunlight and I
can tie knots and do things without having to change glasses.
I liked Rayban until I tried Costa's.

I've had Maui Jim's and they are good glasses. But they are super expensive. And they are heavy. The glass lenses weigh a lot. After my last pair slipped off my head and sank to the bottom I bought a pair of Native's. They are polarized and have a lifetime warrenty. In fact, I'm on my second pair which they gave me as a replacement for the originals after several years of abuse. I like the poly-carb lenses. They've proved very scratch resistant (I do NOT take good care of them) and they are much lighter than the Maui's.
