Best Time to Run Fire Island Inlet

I think the best time to run the Inlet is Slack Tide, but I just want to confirm, as I am old and forgetful. We are heading out the Inlet to Greenport Saturday, tides are:

Tides for Democrat Point, Fire Island Inlet starting with June 28, 2008.

So if Low is at 9:25AM, is any time from 9:30AM to say 11:30AM good to run inlet to outside? Or is slack after high better?

The current at FI inlet runs for 3 hours after the high tide time. Look at the Babylon tide times for a close approximation of the slack tide time at the inlet. On Saturday slack high will be about 5:40am, slack low around 12:30pm. So unless you leave before 6am you're going to have outgoing tide. If it's calm it shouldn't be a problem. They dredged the inlet over the winter and shifted the buoys to the east of where they used to be. The depth is pretty good and as long as it's relatively calm you'll be fine. The wind is supposed to be building from the southeast in the afternoon so I would not suggest waiting for the afternoon incoming tide to leave or you'll have a very long ride heading east into the waves.

I would also not suggest leaving before 6am because the whole fleet fishing the Bay Shore mako tournament will be running out the inlet in the morning :D I figure I'll be going through the inlet at about 5:30am.

Thanks. We will probably just shoot for some time in the morning. Guess I should check Moriches times in case the ocean is bad and we decide to go inside.

Looks like High Tide in Moriches will be around 4:30AM!
Looks like ocean run is the best course, lets hope for calm seas!

Run the freaking inlet will you.... IF its blowing anyting other then a gale ull be fine ... sheesh....

FI is the best inlet on LI, don't sweat it.

That is so funny, last year, a few times I got caught outside in some rough seas, the smoothest way in was not to follow the markers, but as you said" to the east of them"

Seriously, morning is supposed to be much better than in the afternoon. Are you planning to go into Shinnecock inlet? That may be trickier if the wind picks up.

Walt, Shinnecock inlet is no issue... Only concern would be wind and that apply to any inlet.

I have seen Fire Island Inlet with rollers breaking in it, in the channel.
I was just checking for some local advice from the experts who run it all the time.
I know how to get through the inlet, but I know there are certain times such as a incoming tide with a south wind, where it can be tricky.

Sheesh....lighten up!
 
Any inlet can have challenges at times, we all know that. I don't think FI inlet is too bad compared to others, but have seen it nasty where I would not go out and headed to sore thumb.

I have only gone though Shinecock inlet a couple of times; once was smooth as glass and the other when I was heading out, I think incoming tide and some winds, I buried my bow a few times and was nasty until I got about a mile out before it calmed down. I would have had a real problem if I need to turn around. [:-scared]
