I bought a boat recently and need to change the name; is there an easy way to remove paint from gelcoat that doesn't damage it?

Easy off oven cleaner (a rubber gloves) should do it without harming the gelcoat.

Then clean real well and apply polish/wax.

"Best way to remove boat name?"

The best way? Buy a freshly made boat! [:-bonc01]

It would still scare me,however, I have seen two brave owners use Oven Off with no problems.

I tried the elbow grease and acetone method already, way too slow.. [:-banghead]

Heard of using oven cleaner, but wondered if anyone here had actually tried it and could vouch for it.

Oven cleaner is the best way. I did my boat 4 years ago and a friends boat this year. Spray on the oven cleaner, let it sit 10 or so seconds and with a scrub brush start scrubbibg. Wash off with hose so oven cleaner does not sit on gel too long. Spray again and keep doing this cycle until all paint is gone. Clean off area with water and then the surface is ready for applying new name. Don't wax until you put the new name on..

I used oven cleaner on an old Chris*Craft sailboat that the previous owner painted over all the gelcoat. Everything came off and the gelcoat looked good as new.

Cool, now if I can just convince the admiral that because oven cleaner is used, it is her job to remove the boat name.. any suggestions on that one? :D

I think you should do all the work of removing the name and for her to sit in a chair on the dock read her book. So if she gets thirsty you can drop what you are doing and get her a drink or what ever she needs. The deal with us I do everything she sits backs and enjoys herself. Then when your all done you can clean yourself up and take her to a resturant because she deserve it.Boating is a woman thing of doing nothing but relaxing and the guy does it all.

Go for it, but my bet's on her.

(around here, I do the work and she keeps the margaritas coming)

Salvatore356, your suggestion may have merit. Do you get enough sympathy points for doing all the work while still tending to her needs? :D

Willie, that is a safe bet, my friend. [^]

Oven cleaner works! With minimal effort as well. But I did manage to pretend it was extremely hard work while the admiral sat just a few feet away in the shade.

She finally got the hint and fetched a cool drink... for herself. [:-boggled]
