This project is officially underway. Here is the latest scoop:

"Status of traffic changes:

1. There may be one lane traffic control at times from the hours of 7am to 3pm. These will be listed in the 2 week look ahead below. Flagmen will be present for this.
2. We will need to stop vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic for 10 minutes +/- to allow the Contractor to initially install the 48" pile steel casings (85' tall) and re-bar cages (110' tall) due to safety concerns. Emergency traffic will be allowed to pass. Flagmen will be present for this.

2 week look ahead:

June 22 week:
1. Pothole for the sewer line at the north end of the bridge.
2. Install area signs
3. Clear and Grub [ed. this is contractor talk for cleaning the area for construction]

June 29 week:
1. Grading for Bethel Island detour
2. Grading for Wells Rd detour
3. Install drainage structure #1 .

July 6 week:
1. Start trestle work on the D'Anna side.

Yeah, I've been over to the Island quite a bit lately for various reasons and have been watching the activity slowly begin.

I drove by when the Rinker dealer was moving his boats out and dismantling the deck around the sales trailer. I see that he is now in the lot behind the Boathouse. I bet a "Just Moved" sign would help out his traffic a little bit. As it is now, it just looks like he closed up shop and left town...

La Villa has seen busier days. We enjoyed two meals there this past week and we were the only ones inside the place! Their help needs a little help too. Since they opened their new location in Oakley, we've (sadly) noticed a steep decline in the service there.

In a way, I am sad to see the old bridge go, but I do look forward to the new one.

Do you know if Trader Dick still hangs out on his boat just down the levee? I always enjoyed perusing the shelves in his old place. I even sold him some stuff. Good guy!

How about Norm Shier, the Hummer guy?
 
Hmmmmmm, let see what info I have and others can chime in also!

Rinker dealer [Pacific Boat Center] can't have a "Just Moved" sign cause of the new bridge construction. He will probably have a sign on BI Rd pointing the way down Taylor Rd. His 9 acres is beside "Tugs", aka the Boathouse, on Taylor Rd. As a customer, I received a New Address notice via email......

LaVilla is having big problems. Many do not like the food now. The owners divorced and one partner opened in Oakley and took the cook along. The new cook on BI ain't so great I hear.

Big boats coming and going from SJYC will love the new bridge......

I have no info on Trader Dick. Norm Shier and his wife are still members of SJYC, but I haven't seen Norm at the club for quite awhile. I don't know him personally......

Rusty Porthole has been quietly for sale for some time, but now they have LARGE for sale signs posted around. I guess they really want to move on from this investment now. Nothing on their website about it though......

Bethel Island Bridge Replacement Project
June Update

June 23, 2009

The Bethel Island Bridge Replacement Project is officially going to start in late June, 2009. The project will replace the existing bridge that provides access from Contra Costa County / City of Oakley to Bethel Island along Bethel Island Road. The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors awarded the project to the Construction Company CC Myers, Inc., of Rancho Cordova, on May 12, 2009.

Project Work:
Bridge Work: The bridge work includes replacing the existing timber/concrete bridge (28’ x 459’) with a new nine-span 863 foot structure constructed in two stages with overall widths ranging from 45 feet to 56 feet. In-water work is from June 15 to October 31. The east side (stage 1) will be constructed this season and will be adjacent to the existing bridge on the east side. Stage 2 work includes removing the existing bridge and constructing the stage 2 bridge almost over the existing bridge location. The touchdown location at the north end, adjacent to D’anna Yacht Center, will remain in the same location. The increased length will extend further south than the existing bridge touching down near Wells Road. The overall height of the new bridge will be slightly higher than the existing bridge. The bridge will have a wider sidewalk at mid-span to allow for a look out onto Dutch Slough for pedestrians. There will be decorative lighting on the bridge.

Work on the temporary trestle, which allows the Contractor to construct the permanent bridge, is scheduled to start the week of July 6. The stage 1 bridge is scheduled to be completed in early 2010. The Stage 2 bridge is scheduled to start in June 2010 and be complete by the end of 2010.

Road Work: A new asphalt concrete roadway will be constructed on embankments varying to 18’ in height. Other items include installing storm drain pipe, concrete curb/sidewalk/ditch, rock slope protection, sheet piling, sanitary sewer, utility, joint trenches, signing and striping. Bethel Island Road (Partial), Wells Road (Partial) and South Levee Road will be raised and re-built to match the bridge. Utilities will be supported in or under the new bridge. Roadwork is scheduled to start the week of June 29, 2009.

Detours:
As a first order of work, the Wells road detour road will be constructed to allow access from Bethel Island Road to Wells road. This temporary detour will allow Wells Road and a South Levee Detour to be raised and
constructed. Additionally, the contract provides for a Bethel Island Road detour road (2-lane) on the west side of Bethel Island Road in front of the Marine Emporium to give the Contractor access to the work.

The following businesses within the limits of work will remain open during the construction. D’anna
Yacht sales, Marine Emporium and Keller’s Liquors.

Project Highlights:
The Contractor will pay particular attention to aquatic life in the slough. In-water work is restricted from June 15 to October 31 for 2009 and 2010. They will install an oversized (8 feet diameter) temporary shell with an air bubbler system to minimize turbidity, vibration and noise in the water during pile driving operations. The contract allows the Contractor 360 working days (~18 months) to complete the work. Project completion is anticipated to be in the Fall of 2010. We are aware of the upcoming car event on July 18/19 and will ensure the project has minimal impacts to this event.

Contractor: CC Myers (www.ccmyers.com) was the low bidder of 7 bidders at $10,278,713.00. The
Engineer’s Estimate was $12.2 million.

I wasn't thinking of a permanent billboard or anything like that, just a banner sign tied up to the fence of their old place letting folks (and potential new customers) know that they moved and didn't shut down.

Even if it was there for only a few weeks, it would have been better than nuttin'!

Or maybe not...
 
The fencing may be gone by now........but a banner somewhere along the route would help!!!
